How long since you previously started the bus? I found that after 3 weeks of being out of town my Crown was slow to start. It doesn't have glow plugs, but I figured the fuel line maybe lost some pressure. The next start was much better. My 93 F250 and the HUMVEE are slow to start when not started for a while. I would suggest charging up the batteries before more attempts to start. Weak batteries can smoke a starter. Also check the battery connections. I also had problems with that.

What [emoji115] HE [emoji115] just said. Especially:
For me, where the batteries' ground-strap was bolted to the rail proved to be my eclectic electrical culprit's hideout!
Durned villainous voltage varmints.

does your fuel filter have the hand primer pump on top of the filter housing?
my 2000 duramax had a problem with that primer pump seal bad and it would lose prime.

Check the fuel lift pump, should be on the framerail under the driver's door. They like to fail on the old 6.5s. They can sometimes start with failed lift pumps if you crank on them enough and this puts a lot of stress on the injection pump. That sucker is a few thousand now, so you should check the lift pump as a preventative maintenance item anyway.

Something else to consider is the FSD, the little controller for the injection pump. They had a horrible failure rate, especially if left mounted on the side of the injection pump as stock. Most engines have been fitted with remotely mounted FSDs on a heat sink.
