Thoughts on Chevy 5.7L 3500

Hello All,

I am currently looking at a 2003 Chevy Vortec 5.7L 3500. Do you guys have any thoughts on this engine. I believe 2003 was the last year they used the 5.7L before moving to the 5.3. From what I hear the 5.7 might be a little more reliable in the long term then the 5.3 but the gas mileage will be worse. Do you all agree?

Does anyone have any idea what I should expect for the gas mileage. I am a little concerned since its a 5.7 and a 3500 so the gearing is probably working against good gas mileage.

Thanks!

Fuel mileage depends on the size and weight of the vehicle. The 5.7L been around many years and is dependable and easy to find parts for. Expect less than 10 MPG.

Thanks for the reply. It is a shorty with the van front. I believe it weighs around 10,000 but that will go up when I load it with stuff. I was hoping to get 11-12 but maybe that just isn't possible with the 5.7?
