Transmission Reprogramming

Hi guys,
We just bought a 2004 GMC Savana 3500 5 window with the 6.0 gas, and are getting ready to pick it up.
The seller replaced the transmission, and is saying we need to get it "reprogrammed" before its ready to go, but they also say the bus drives well as is before the reprogramming.
Does anybody have experience with transmission replacements and reprogramming? is it necessary if the bus drives well as is? is there the possibility of engine or transmission damage if we don't do this reprogramming?

hard to tell with your description?
to me the shop or person that put the transmission in should have either made it had the correct program for the appplication/his intended purpose or the capable shop that put it in should have reprogrammed it for the application of what they were installing it in.
even if it is reprogramable is it correct for that application.
if you 6.0 is still living and blowing transmission,s?
i can only assume the engine has been bulletproofed?
if the transmission cant talk to the engine then it probalbly wont move if it moves and then ask why it needs to be programmed?

I don't know one way or the other.

I can tell you that a friend of mine just rebuilt the transmission in his 2007 GMC with the gas 6.0.

There was no reprogramming needed.

slow down and make him pay for the reprogram and or show you reciepts if it is done out of your site.

yesi i assume he rebuilt the one that came out of his truck.
now some junkyard truck tranny that matches bellhousing patterns,shaft splines for a truck into a small bus match but the programming is different shift pattterns aint matched to the engine rpm the tranny installer should have done a complete install without a program needed unless they put a better or worse tranny in it?

Roger this a GMC gas 6.0 - not the ford power stroke 6.0.. no bulletproofing needed..



I never heard of needing to reprogram after a rebuild, other than to reset the auto-learn.. however the transmission if rebuilt and installed correctly should work...



is it a 4L80E transmission in that? the ECM shoiuld clear any limp-mode codes on akey cycle so if the trans is still setting Check engine lights or going into limp i would run away from that bus unless the seller plans to hand it to you ready to drive..

Thanks for the input guys.
The seller put in a new transmission, so not a rebuild of the original.
He says the bus runs and drives well with the new transmission, but says it still needs to be programmed before it's 100% ready. We are unsure if they also replaced the TCM during the swap. We talked to a shop and they didn't understand why the transmission for this vehicle would need reprogramming.
Ultimately we're trying to understand if them needing to reprogram makes sense or if they're being dishonest about something.

What's in that? 4L85E?

The transmission has no internal computer to program, or that will accept any firmware whatsoever. There in fact are no "electronics" by definition at all internally .. just (four I think?) solenoids.

I'm a dubious bugger by nature. If the trans is "factory new" and not rebuilt .. then the dealer did it .. why is there any issue with firmware?

Receipts?

Are there any stored or pending codes? A wrench symbol or "check engine" light?

Something sounds fishy here .. I'd have my spidey senses on full red alert.
