Cummins to replace Detroit Diesel?

Please pardon my naivety!

We recently purchased a completely converted ‘89 Chevy S6000 school bus with the 8.2-liter Detroit Diesel. I don’t know the transmission that it’s mated to, but I’m sure someone here might know.

The Detroit Diesel that’s in it, as you know, is incredibly underpowered so I was wondering if anybody could recommend the best possible, mechanical diesel replacement. Also, should I get an engine/transmission combo?

I’ve been checking out the 5.9 and the 8.3 Cummins, but I’ve also seen people say that the 5.9 is still under powered.

Any and all advice is welcomed.

Thank you so much for your time!
