Cummins to replace Detroit Diesel?

Please pardon my naivety!

We recently purchased a completely converted Ď89 Chevy S6000 school bus with the 8.2-liter Detroit Diesel. I donít know the transmission that itís mated to, but Iím sure someone here might know.

The Detroit Diesel thatís in it, as you know, is incredibly underpowered so I was wondering if anybody could recommend the best possible, mechanical diesel replacement. Also, should I get an engine/transmission combo?

Iíve been checking out the 5.9 and the 8.3 Cummins, but Iíve also seen people say that the 5.9 is still under powered.

Any and all advice is welcomed.

Thank you so much for your time!
