2005 Bluebird DT466E / Allison 2000 ECM/TCM Com Fault

For the past week, I have been trying to troubleshoot an electrical communication issue with my 2005 Bluebird International DT466E and Allison 2000 Transmission.

I was driving when the orange warning engine light came on but then went off. I've noticed a shudder in the shifting twice while driving around 35-40mph. I took it for a test drive two days ago and when I pulled up to a stop sign the engine shut down. Luckily it restarted and I was able to get back to my friend's house in Central Florida, but I am running out of ideas.

So far I have checked fuses, and relays, the oil in electrical connections has been cleaned, and new starter batteries installed.

The two codes that Love's read for me are:
Transmission SPN 2003 FMI 31
Body Controller SPN 2033 FMI 14 Count 1

If anyone has ideas I would love to get this figured out without having to buy a new ECM or TCM...

Check all the connections to the ECM and TCM first. Take them off, look for corrosion, clean as necessary. Transmission speed sensors could be an issue too but I don't think that would kill the engine. Possibly engine crank position/speed sensors too?

Where would the speed sensors or crank position sensors be located so that I can also check those connections?

I believe the ECM is under the glovebox and the TCM is mounted on the frame rail next to the transmission. Does that sound correct?

I'm a CAT guy with an Allison 3000 so I'm no help on the component locations here. I'm sure someone else will know.

I took a look at the TCM wire connectors and everything looks clean. Last night a local bus mechanic came out and the check engine light had gone off. Today, when I went to go check it out the light, was back on...

There doesn't appear to be any corrosion that I can see on these connection points.

I got a 2006 IC CE200 with the VT365 but I have seen several CE300s with this engine equipped.

What you have specifically is a Blue Bird SBCV and the chassis is an International 3300 (the CE series are on the same chassis but with IC bodywork) That being said the DT466E equipped has the ECU attached directly to the engine, on the drivers side towards the rear of the engine block. It’s a bit difficult to reach as it sits under the intake and the frame rail might interfere with accessing it.

(A 2005 MY engine for reference as to where the ECU is) (the ECU has three plugs that look like upside down “T”s and it’s above the starter and behind the oil dipstick tube.)

The ECM might also be on the drivers side towards the front of the engine (about the same height as the coolant bottle)

Check your clean power and ground wiring, connections, and fuses first. Look closely at the terminals, they can be spread and cause all sorts of issues. Here is an example of one on a ground splice in a 2019 IC CE bus I ran into this last week.

I've also fixed BCM/TCM/ABS comm codes by updating the body control module calibration, basically giving it the latest software. You will have to go to a dealer for that or find someone with Diamond Logic Builder.
