2005 IC RE300 466 Pre-emissions?
Hi all, I am on a quest for a bus and found a 2005 RE300 40' with 2004 on the manufacture date. It has the DT466e and MD3060 trans. Is this the newest bus I will find without as many emmisions issues or is it the first year of potential trouble?
Thanks in advance!
James

2004 would have been the first year. Other than the year, that's a nice combo and worth looking at if the price is right.

2005 has EGR but not a DPF filter.. generally pretty good as long as coolant and oil are maintained and have been ..

Hahaha! Awesome....kinda. I sure do appreciate the answers, you are just the folks I was hoping to chime in!
Thats a bummer on the emissions, big bummer....i think? Can the egr not be blocked like most do on the same year pickups?
As you all know, its getting harder to find clean older busses without all the crap. I watched an 02 8.3 bus, not sure what trans but I assume it wasn't an 545, locally round 5k before I stopped watching it. This 05 has 180k miles, rust free and is super clean, its 500 miles away. Asking price is $6700 at a small dealer. I know thats not a steal but it has a good engine, great trans, a/c (this should get Chris going),basement storage and is a 40' RE.
I am hesitant to post the CL link because I know first hand how many people watch these boards for busses, I am one of them. Its in southern tx if you want to see it, or tell me to stop being paranoid and post the link.
Goal is to build a traveling bus for the 5 of us, no plans to live in it, but want to take the kids to see the country while they still want to. I am planning on insulation, maybe window deletes\ rv windows, mini split, full size bathroom, bunks and a functional kitchen. Basically a family RV that isnt a giant POS.
So, anyone else care to weigh in? I really do appreciate the insight.

Thanks!
What price are you thinking? After reading here for a couple of months, add in some pandemic, watch the local bus market for several months and I am scratching my head on what is reasonable. This bus checks the boxes, well besides the emissions that I am struggling with.

Appreciate it. I will certainly check those fluids, what kind of signs would I see that should make me walk? I would assume a small dealer would make sure they look fresh before (ASSumption on my part) they add a couple grand to the price they paid at auction. Maybe ask if they can produce service records from the district? The guy is decently responsive over text, but doesnt seem know too much about it.

Thanks, I appreciate it.
Edit: Sorry, jumped the gun, after a more specific search I see you have answered this a few other times.
Do you mind expanding a little? I have an idea of what the EGR does and why you dont want it. Is it a huge problem like 6.0 Ford's, egr cooler, head gaskets, etc? I guess 180k is a lot of miles for it to be pumping soot back into the engine.

They don't have the 6.0 problems to my understanding. EGR without DPF and DEF is certainly better than EGR with DPF and DEF.

Nice gillig!!! What trans is in that? Be mindful of its multiplex system before you start ripping out wires and switches and things..
These are great busses but are also pretty complex in their electronics.

Thanks Chris! I was told it has a V500R, but the small amount of research I have done, shows they came with a B400R. I know it has a retarder as I have driven it a few times, it cruises really nice at 65, or maybe I should say floats very nice at 65. The drive is so much better than the 32ft gas class A that I drove last year, night and day different.
Do you know of a good resource to start learning about the electronics? I am not sure what all I would or should remove, so far the complicated handicap lift is on the chopping block.

im not familiar with a complicated lift other than the kneeling bus which I always thought was a great feature.. the b400R is a great transmission.. tried and true!

See if this link works. Apparently all of the ducks must line up with multiple relays, sensors, hydraulics, etc. The guy I am buying the from said to deploy it at home, then I can search for the manual procedure to stow it. He has wasted many hours messing with these lifts. He runs a fleet of 10+ Gillig party busses.

What does the shift pad look like? Is it large big push buttons in a row or a shift pad with a digital display? The latter will be B400R. The former will the be Voth transmission.

It has the digital display and says Allison right above it. Thanks for the info! When I get it home I will block it up and crawl under for 100% verification.
