The 543 code has been there since the beginning, that was what prompted trying the ford idm. The ECU is definitely on my radar, but since the WTS light illuminates I was in no hurry to blame it. If I do replace the ECU, is it best to find one with the same parameters, or have it flashed it an reprogrammed?

Finally got back to the bus after nearly a month. Decided to remove the hpop reservoir. Seal was all blown out and no doubt dumping oil right back down the front cover. I'll replace it and see if it builds.

nothing looks out of the ordinary there... a melling M208 is a good replacement LPOP if you think yours is worn out..

did you vane no LPOP pressure? (ie did you pull an oil plug out like for the air brake compressor and see if after a few seconds you belch oil while cranking?

No brake compressor, but I have checked pressure at the hpop res. Zero pressure. My concern with the timing cover is that it has a significant groove through the center. Close to a 1/16 deep, between the pickup tube side and the outlet to the hpop quick fill and oil cooler end. I'm not overly experienced with 7.3's so I'm not confident in what kind of tolerance the front cover would allow, and still pump.

After much time and effort, she runs again.

At the end of the day, there were a couple known issues, a couple found, and some discovered in between.

First, the lack of low pressure was a big hurdle that eventually lead to the replacement of the front cover, which due to my situation, was done engine in place. The scored cover was found after ruling out the IPR, ICP, oil level, cracked pickup tube, etc.

Now, previous to replacing the cover, the majority of codes were fixed with charged batteries and a camshaft position sensor. Batteries solved KAM codes, CPS solved all the ecm to idm codes and a couple others, with the exception of code 543.
This one was tricky. A buzz test revealed a burnt up valve cover harness, the replacement of this revealed no evidence of oil return at the injectors, meaning no voltage sent to turn them on. This put me on the track of IDM power. Ultimately what I found was a bad 10M (IDM) relay. I had checked this before, but swapping it did nothing as the scored cover prevented the start due to lack of oil pressure. The relay also would show near B+ voltage, but drop too low under load because of high contact resistance.

At this point, I had turned the key and it almost caught! I read the codes, and low and behold, 111, all systems go.
She purrs like a kitten now, and starts right up!
Thanks for all the help!

glad you got it figured out and running again.
moving forward you know what doesnt need to be changed for awhile and you have learned your engine to a point and codes.

It was a trick to change the front cover. Had about 20 hrs into it. Couldn't get the oil pan all the way out with out removing much of the front end, so I decided to clean everything around it first so I could drop it as far as possible and move it around a bit. This ate up about 5hrs, but I didn't have access to a engine hoist or stand, and as it won't see lots of miles, I decided to chance it. After the oil pan dropped and I lifted the engine a bit, the front cover went together smoothly. Sealing the pan was a chore too.

If theres no white smoke when you crank, its the fuel pump. Just remember you have to crank awhile.
