Allison 3000PTS - No reverse

Hello all. Bus is a 06 International 300RE DT466E with an Allison 3000PTS trans.

Problem I'm having is intermittent loss of reverse "push button display shows an X when I press the reverse button. Ill clarify that this was intermittent about 3 times, and now no reverse at all.

I pulled 2 codes using the push button keypad:

d12312 - "Primary shift selector or RSI link fault"
d26600 - "Serial communications interface fault".

When i check the trans fluid level using the push button keypad, it says the trans is 7 quarts low. The trans is full on the dipstick, so apparently the trans sump fluid sensor is sticking or bad.

I have a Nexiq scanner with Allison version 8.4 installed on my laptop.

I cannot connect to the trans using the 9 pin Deutsch connector in the rear engine bay.

I can run engine diagnostics as well as Bendix brake diagnostics through this port, but not the Allison diagnostics.

I have read here that it may need to be plugged in to the Deutsch connector under the front dashboard. I have an open 6 pin male Deutsch connector there, as well as a 9 pin Deutsch male and female plugged together right next to it.

I was thinking that maybe my multiplexer module under the dash board went out, but wouldn't that cause other issues too?

Could the trans not go into reverse because it thinks it is 7 quarts low? But then, why would it go into forward?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Very thorough troubleshooting so far.

The 9 pin under your dash is likely legacy monitoring from the school district and could be unplugged to connect the nexiq.

Does servicemaxx show any error codes related to the transmission?

I'm not overly familiar with the sensor layout on the Allison, is the fluid level sensor easy to get at and replace? I'd start there if it is.

LOL… I gotta laugh, not at you but the crazy MD 3060 wiring nightmares!

Twice that I have had keypad issues and twice I fixed it !

Read through this thread, there is a lot of good info there.

This thread is where it all started for me, dreaded dark panel !

Hint….find the broken wire!

As much of a longshot as it might be, I've heard of people discovering that somewhere along the line a wrong dipstick found it's way into a vehicle. Don't think you should spend much time thinking about it but if all else fails it might be worth checking.

If you get desperate you could do a fluid change so you'd know you had the right amount in it because YOU put it in.

Today I tried throwing the push button keypad in the freezer. Left it in the freezer for a few hours, then pulled it out and tried it on the bus. Still no reverse. Just an X instead of R and the trans light on the instrument cluster illuminates.

Tried hitting the trans sump with a large rubber mallet to see if that would free up the level sensor. No luck

Ill try hooking the Nexiq up to the Deutsch connector under the dashboard and see if my Allison software connects. Thanks for all the replies!!!

Since you got the pushpad out I would very highly recommend that you tone out the wires for continuity from the push pad to the TCU (black) connector.

I believe there are five control wires, 2 power wires and a ground.

Your first original post indicates and open wire.

d12312 - "Primary shift selector or RSI link fault"
d26600 - "Serial communications interface fault".

A broken wire, seems to me, is one of the most common problems with these push pads.

Could be from corrosion or could be from stress/ vibration.

In any event I feel that this without verifying the integrity of that cable you might be spinning your wheels on trying other things first.

Well, I finally got it figured out this last weekend. It was a broken wire between the push button shifter, and the trans ecu. Just want to say thank you to everyone for their help, especially Ewo1

Great news !!!

Where exactly did you find the broken wire?
Was it at a connector or mid stream inside the harness somewhere?

Mind sharing what you did to find it?
Not for me but there will be others in the future with similar problems!
A few pics would be great too!!!

The wires all checked good with an ohm meter. I tried your suggestion of running a load "4.5 amp draw with a headlight bulb" and that's when it showed up as broken wire. I'm bot sure where it broke or grounded. Due to weather, I just ran a new wire for now. I will repost next spring when I drop the fuel tank for replacement. It's not going to be driven till then so it will be ok. I definitely want to track down the actual broken wire as there may be more in that location that need replacement or repair.

When you do get down to it next spring, here is a company in North Carolina that sells all the Allison connector parts.... just in case you need a pin or something..
Best of luck!
