Get the right bolts. Order em in if you have to from mcmaster or another quality supplier. Don't skimp, and definitely use loctite on them. Grade 8/10.9 minimum, a lot are actually 12.9.

Be sure to torque them too WITH an accurate torque wrench, never use an impact.

It's better to be a day or two out now waiting on bolts, then it is to be a week out miles from home.

I'm surprised IH couldn't look up the number. I'd bet money they have them on the shelf.

Due to the torsional forces involved and the cost of repairing the destruction caused, think crankshaft, Allison ect I would only use the factory supplied bolts. Don’t get in a hurry or be penny wise and pound foolish. They can look it up. They are just being lazy if they want you to supply a part number. That is their job.

Yeah I don’t care to spend the money on them, or wait if I have too. But everyone I talk to tells me they can’t help me without a vin number. I’m coming up with a bolt that is 50mm long, which is right under two inches.

The closest international part number for flywheel bolts is 43mm, I’m thinking that’s too short. It won’t be screwed all the way down into the crank.

Have a Fastenal or other bolt depot in the area? If it truly is a metric bolt then 12mm-1.25 x 50mm isn't such an exotic bolt. Grab a 10.9 grade.

I’m running grade 8 with a little loctite and torque wrench torqued with no issues. They are oretty high torque. I had to block the engine from spinning to get them right

I have to ask, did you get the un-obtainium spacer you need to hook an MT643 to a T444E?

Yeah I have gave up on looking for the bolts for today, I’ve wasted enough time. Looks like I’m going to have to order some.

I’ve started on cleaning the flywheel housing and preparing to remove the rear main seal. Hopefully I can get the new one put in today.

JT, I hear your frustration. You're doing the right thing by waiting and getting the right parts. Your peace of mind when it's all done will be well worth the wait and $.

Sounds like you have other things to do today anyway, so you're still being productive.

Chill....it's going to be fantastic when it all works.

Try Saunders Engine Co. Mobile, Al. and Gulf Shores , Al. Or Kennedy Engine Co. Biloxi, MS. All of these are Allison Transmission dealers and Rebuilders. They have rebuilt many Allison’s for my trucking company.

Thanks for the advice. I got the flywheel housing cleaned out before it decided to come a hail storm, got a break in the rain and went back out and got the rear main seal out.

The wear sleeve was a pain to get out. I scratched the crank just a little in the process. Then the rain returned.

The bottom of the crank looked a little off to me, had some grooves in it, hopefully that’s normal.

We decided to call it a day and have a beer to our good dog Bo, we had to put him down yesterday, he was good dog, sure do miss him being around.

So sorry for your loss. Such a sweet looking boy. He's up playing with all the pups I've let go.

RIP Bo.

My condolences JT20. In my lifetime I have had put down more than a few of my furry friends and it hurts. In fact in my bus over the fireplace is a container with my cat Pogo’s ashes. He and I were very close, and I still miss him. So I know how you must feel.

Thanks guys, yeah he was a good dog, had him since he was a puppy, he was 9 this year, we lost our other lab who was 12 this past November. So now we are down to the wiener dog and a cat. It’s crazy how when you have a pet for that long, kinda becomes like family.

Any who, if it quits raining today I may try and put that new seal in. The roughness of the bottom of the crank made me a little nervous, but I guess that’s normal.

So guys I've got a question.

Since I'm at a point that I could remove the flywheel housing, would it be worth it to pull it and check the rear cam seal?

my understanding there is one behind that housing.

I would hate to leave it if its a possibility that it could be bad. are they a common thing to go bad or leak?

Got the seal in.

After cleaning and inspecting the flywheel closely, looks like I’m going to need to get a new one. It has two bad places in it. 🤬

isnt the ring gear separate on those or is it a single part, flywheel and ring gear?

it doesnt look bad to me as much as it looks like someone put a starter on it at one point that is barely engaging the gear which if its the current starter very well coould cause issues

Yeah the flywheel and ring gear are one part, wish I could just change the ring gear though.

Not sure on the starter, I did remove it yesterday but haven’t inspected it yet or looked for a part number on it. It was covered in oil.

Definitely want to make sure I do have the correct starter, I guess I will have to call international and get a part number and see if it matches what I have.

Here is another picture of the teeth on it.
