Regarding pyrometers...
be sure to use the numbers (temps) that correspond to where the sensor is located.
Many folks put them in the manifold to take the highest possible temp readings.
Others (including myself) installed the sending unit in the downpipe portion of the exhaust, within 6" behind the turbo. I put mine there for two reasons. First...much easier to install without risking damage to the turbo. And second...that is where Cummins (my engine maker) recommends putting the sender and all of their numbers are based on that location.
Just do a little homework then decide for yourself where to put it and which set of numbers to go by.

What type of pyrometer is best and can it be hooked up to the ecm or do you need a separate gauge?

in a semi-related note, I'm trying to simply connect my wireless hotspot OBD to my bus...
would a simple adapter like the one the OP mentioned work for my needs? is it called a 9pin to obd adapter???
I don't necessarily need the bluefire, scanguage and diy guage features at this time

The protocols are different, a 9 pin to obd2 adapter won’t work unless your adapter is designed to read J1708 or J1939 data, thus why bluefire exists.. the J1708 hardware layer is different and ok a 3126 that’s where most of your data is...
Technically hardware layer for J1939 and OBD2 are the same.. an ELM337 chip device could read it however I’ve not seen any android software that can display 1939 from an ELM327 Device..
To the last question, VDO makes a CAN capable gauge setup with a pyro but no idea if bluefire would display it. BlueFire seems to only display certain parameters by default.. for instance they won’t display j1708 PID164 I’m an international but yet I wrote that PID into the software then it would..

As for separate pyro there are lots, I’ll have to see what mine is. The trick to any pyro is installing the sensor as close to the engine as you can get and always pre turbo

I understand that, but if I'm not mistaken, I would only need the bus to power my obd2 device, not to 'talk' to it necessarily.
In that scenario, would a 9 pin to obd2 adaptor work? I guess I could always get one and try and if not return it...just curious if anyone had my particular situation before.
thanks again

I’m thinking an adapter will do the job. I was thinking you were going to read data

have an old ipad, but now think I remember since this thread popped back up (one of a few I was trying to read) that an Ipad is no good and has to be some other kind that is not apple
I just want to be able to see the data most especially from the new Allison 2000 swap/bodge I did on my vista.
I want to see all the info I can actually. Chris has 2 pads, and I would likely be able to do one prob, but so clueless on this part of the build.
is there a plug and play device I can just plug into the port and be done?

You get some data from the allison over the J1939, what I don’t know is whether bluefire will read both the 1708 engine data and 1939 trans data both.. if you have the 9 pin connector under your dash and hooked the wires to it when you did the trans swap then the data will be there.. the 9 pin version of the bluefire made for iOS devices since you want to use an iPad. That may get you what you want with a single screen. My advice is to buy your bluefire from someplace with a 30 day return policy so you can try it and if it doesn’t do what you need then send it back

Yes I did swap the connectors when I did the swap, so it does read like a normal 9 pin. Then when I look on amazon just so many choices I get confused

The software allows it to read both 1708 and 1939 info if the both boxes are checked in the settings. I haven't set up a tablet yet to see it in a dash, just my phone to get basic info.

I bought mine from the manufacturer, not Amazon.
https://bluefire-llc.com/website/9-p...j1708-adapters
At checkout I used the discount code 'amazon" and got 10% off. Also I got the one for all operating systems since I'm not sure what I will wind up with. Had to pay shipping, less than $10.

ahhh, so this is a wireless device then?
I was looking at wired connectors
Is there not a way to hardwire with some kind of adapter into the pad?
I mean if I have to go wireless I will, but I honestly have always been an old school wired guy and had no issues wiring in the system

Yes wireless, unless you want to have a power supply to your tablet.
Sorry but I am the last one to ask about hardwiring from the connector. Maybe someone else can help.

True, the Ipad (if I can use it, so old) would need power, and there is only one plug..
I can go with the blue fire, its not cost so much as puters that have me worried I buy the wrong stuff
will ask "geek friends" that are local to help me with this part I think, and see if they can hookup this thing you linked if I buy it
