Inspection time for my bus. In Virginia. I'm sure no cat=fail.
I have searched forums but maybe I missed info.
444e Navistar on a diesel 1999 International 28ft bus. Where is a cheap one. I'm so far over budget just trying to be legal I can keep dumping money.
Help please

I don't think they were installed on a bus that old, so you will likely be okay.
Grandfathered in.

There should be a decal on the engine or under the hood with the emission specs. It will generally list what it is supposed to have. EGR, SRC ect. That old I don't think it has SRC. EGR maybe. Unless it had a retrofit and is so noted. Again I don't think so.

t444E had no EGR and no CAT. Some states installed blowby tube crankcase ventilation recirc so blowby gasses and oil didnt go out in the air (or oil on the ground).. california and texas did back then.. others not sure but very rare...

Texas nowadays - there is no emissions testing on diesel vehicles…in fact, many owners of big-ass trucks (diesel pickups) delete the def system. Starting next year, there will be no mandatory annual safety inspection - only emissions testing for gasoline vehicles in the most populous counties

the texas busses were never tested.. houston and DFW and possibly austin had a "green" program where they outfitted all the diesels wit hthe RACOR CCV systems... when i first got my redbyrd there was a sticker on it advertising the system... I actually like it because it returns oil from the blowby tube back into the oil pan rather than lose it on the ground..
it was obvious they installed these things and never maintained them. the filter in mine was so dirty that it was just bypassing ...

My 1995 3800 T444E has the blowby tube. but not recirculation. Was made in Highpoint, NC. For Virginia sale.
I modified my tube recently to blow out the side instead of straight down.

this was a retrofit by school districts..
my T444E has the RACOR CCV-3550 system on it.. seems to work so i dont mess with it.. I change the filter once a year..
its not something I would install if it didnt already have it..

I find my diesel engine oil is cleaner looking without it. It's not even black like it is in most diesels today. Though I have to throw a quart in every so often for reasons stated.

We don't have emission checks in SC either.
We like it that way, but we also have soo much greenery that absorbs everything cars and trucks could put out and then some so smog is never an issue. I never even seen smog till I went to the Utah valley for the first time.

Agreed with folks saying you're grandfathered in if it wasn't factory built with a cat... my understanding is deleting it when it *was* built with one is a problem if you're in a state with emissions checks.
Maybe an unpopular opinion.. but I re-installed a cat after getting my bus and deleted the straight pipe... to feel better about the emissions. Got the part # through repairlink (you can also email RWC group / IC dealership with your vin); found an OEM part on ebay for less than 1/3 of the dealer quote. Happy to share other details if you go down that road.

Not even gonna do that. I honestly don't even care about emissions one bit. Besides congested cities like New York city or LA, I don't even think smog is much of an issue today. I believe it's all a way to remove diesels off the road and restrict movement from average Joes trying to start their own businesses and need a reliable truck. They tried lockdowns with Covid, and they keep pushing measures to make it so we cannot have industry in this country, and personally I'm fed up about it. Even smaller trucking outfits can't afford to stay in business any longer because repairs happen more often due to emissions and they cost 3x as much.
I'm probably going to cut my exhaust in half just cause and make it louder than it already is. America!

There is another way to improve this system.
Use a “catch can” to trap the liquid/mist so it does not coat the inside of the intake tract and intake valves. It will also keep the oil cleaner.

then I have to constantly empty the catch can...
ford built the 7.3 with such a CCV return in the superduties for sure.. i think even the OBS versions...
IH used a draft tube..

A little late here but stumbled across this.
According to this article they could be fitted with a CAT for LEV applications
The engines are found with CATS on fords. Just a Ford thing.
Any inspector would have to have a keen eye to catch a LEV unit.
