Differential question

Hey I have a 96 International 3800 with a DT 466 Mechanical (190 HP), It has a spicer 6+1 tranny with a Dana N175 rear end with a 4.78 rear end, I want to change the gearing to 4.10, I found a 01 Dana N175 out of a 4700 and was wondering if that would / could work or if they made any major changes to those after 96 that would cause it not to work. Thanks!!!

Heres the link to the diff I am looking at: Thompson Motors - Used Trucks, Motors, Transmissions, Truck Parts

should not be a problem

you identified both axles being a dana n175, same axle housing should mean same differential. Look up the part number for the rear u joint on both trucks, and verify that the same part number is used, that should be a dirty double check that these are both going to mount the same.

I did the same for my bus, My rear axle housing is a dana/spicer s110 I looked at truck salvage rear gears for dana/spicer s110 until I found the ratio I was looking for.

You have done the same.

It is a big center section. Going to be heavy. Mine is big enough that I cannot pick up the center section. Jacks and lifts all the way.

36 splines

There are also 3.91 gears available too. They all look to be the same across the years you have quoted.

cheers, william

Thanks!

Awesome, thanks for the help, do you think I should go with 3.91 instead? I will be pulling a 7X16 with a v nose trailer behind it loaded with a couple thousand lbs so I thought the 4.10 would maybe be a better fit

which transmission?

I think there are at least two, one with a 1.00 drive in 7th and one that is over drive in 7th.

which one do you have?

I have geared my bus so that at 65 mph I am turning about 1875 rpm in overdrive 6th. and in 5th 2525 rpm and that is a 1:1 ratio.

I worked with my intended cruise speed and engine rpm then worked backwards to find what i wanted for a gear ratio. I think I will be good on torque at 6th on level ground, and can multiply a little more when in 5th and maintain speed up hills.

You have a larger bus and larger engine. I have a lil ol itty bitty thing.

If you go with the higher 3.91 and you're towing a load it will be slow as molasses going up hill in Jan. coming out of the hole.

Transmission

My 6th gear is direct 1:1 and thats why I think the 4.10 gears might be a better fit due to the weight
