Do I grease this?

We’re doing our first grease job on the bus and while I’m looking for zerks, this joint on the steering shaft caught my eye. Aside from the boot going to bits, the joint wasn’t the type I was expecting and it’s pretty dirty and dried up inside the bell. I think I should clean this out and stuff some clean grease in there?

What the heck is this kind of part called? The only similar thing I could find was for a Scout...

its actually just called a steering shaft and should be greased at its zerk and many people forget it because on some the zerk is in the cab.. others its under the hood

Yes, Virginia, you DO grease that expansion joint. It's usually filled with grease and the boot keeps it all in.

For a cheap replacement boot, you'll need two worm clamps and some old inner tube. It'll work just as good as the factory boot, but you won't have to dismantle the shaft.

Lovely! I can certainly do that since I didn’t really want to take it apart this week. I didn’t find a zerk for it but I can look again. I did find 31 other ones if I’m remembering correctly.
