Ty, you are right. I use this on a mobile device and though it works just fine, it's not optimized. I should use a bigger screen to get the most out of it.

Speed Limiter

I have a 1995 International 3800 30ft bus, 320k miles. Dt466 engine (not dt466E) with Allison Transmission. I just got it from LA school district but it doesnít go over 55mph. Any suggestions how to make it faster? Is there a governor? Iíve also heard people unlock a 6th gear? How do I know if I have 6 gear? Please help! Thanks

Your engine speed limiter is inside the fuel injection pump. If you have an automatic transmission, it is likely to be mt643 four speed, with lock up torque converter.

1) identify what you have for a transmission

2) identify what you have for a rear axle

3) identify what the gear ratio is in the rear axle.

After those questions are answered then you have the information you need to answer your questions.

What’s your rpm at 55 mph? The 466 maxes around 2600. You only have 6th gear in an auto if it has a digital shift control. The standard r n d 3 2 1 shift handle isn’t that on any 6 gear trans.

1995 was very first release year of the md3060 world trans, seriously doubt school busses got them in that year but maybe.

Yes the sticker I found is that model, and indicated it has a 6th gear. My bus is auto and uses the digital shifter. R N D 321. It says “MD-3060-3560 operating tips” at the top and describes used of gears 1-6

this one will be tricky as its a WTEC-II most likely which uses an old very obsolete Pro-Scan tool to program it.. you May find osmeone that has it but most wont touchb anything older than WTEC-III.

so is your shifter the Handle with a single-digit display next to the handle?

I believe it is only single digit. What does that indicate? What would it mean if it is dual digit? Later model?

Also what is the WTEC II and III? Is this the model of the speed limiter?

WTEC II is the early control version.. the 3000 series transmission is fully electronic. Allison has had “generations” of control systems. The WTEC II was used up until mid year 98, when WTEC III came out in 98 it deployed the more modern (still in use) J1939 data link and Allison DOC PC based programming software started to become reality.

The WTEC II models required a dedicated scan tool to program them . I have never seen or used this tool so I don’t know how 6th gear unlock was handled on them. I’m assuming when you put your trans in D a number 5 lights up on the display ?

There may be some companies which can reprogram your TCM to have the 6th gear.

Any idea what the contact info is for International? I need to get permission to unlock Allison gear 6, then contact Allison to get permission. A shop here said it’s a liability thing.

Contact your closest Navistar truck dealer with your VIN # handy. Navistar was bought out by VW so no telling how it is going to work now. The liability thing is becoming a problem for everyone.

I don't understand the "liability" thing at all. How is Allison liable for anything I do in my privately owned vehicle. What if my bus came with 6th unlocked, how would an identical bus without 6th open create an issue for Allison if it were unlocked. It's just too easy for them to just say no, and not give a f**k about anyone cares.

What do you guys think about a 95 international 3800 dt466 engine and Allison transmission md 3060 with 320k miles? I bought it for $3200. Good deal? What is the life expectancy on these motors?

Between the loss controllers and the lawyers nobody will make a move. I was at a truck shop a few years back installing mobile business radios in oilfield trucks and they were telling me how they got around that crap. They bought a fleet of used trucks that were set to 62 mph max and the freightliner stealership would only set them to 65 mph. So they sent them with the low pro 22.5 tires and rims and had them set to 65 mph and brought them back and switched out to 11r 24.5. Now they can run 75-77 mph. They made a card taped to the dash with the correct speeds and now run like that. So problem solved. Besides if they use the odometer for mileage tax then they are getting a discount too,

They don't partly because of liability, partly because of the fact they don't need to.

They've got miniscule incentive to serve us, we're not the original purchaser of the bus, or a large portion of their end users, so anything we do or want is very little income to them. The liability issue isn't so much that they are or aren't liable for the product after it's delivered, it's the potential lawsuits that could be derived from it. You don't need to be at fault to be sued, and litigation isn't cheap anymore.

why even bother with the OEM? go 3rd party all the way.. screw the OEM...
contact PCM electronics, defeo, or any of the 3rd parties that have been discussed in numerous threads on this board.. thats how I would go about it...

So to answer a few previous questions, I am getting more info about my bus. I have a lot of quest that all tie into what we have been discussing, thanks in advance!

….I have the Allison md 3060, I have a rear ratio of 6.14, BF Goodrich tires with diameter of 39.8 (36.5 loaded) and Allison transmission. I called a dealer and supplied my VIN and was told “It’s a 5 speed overdrive.” Dealer didn’t know if it was 4 gears plus one OR 5 gears plus one. Any advice?

1). I just bought a new instrument cluster so I can get my RPMs and see where I am governed. Problem is, I have to calibrate it first with the dip switches. Any advice? What Info must I obtain to calculate the switches? I was quoted $500+ just for that and would like to do it myself….

2). What other info do I need to see if I can unlock my 6th gear? I would prefer not to spend $500+ to find out my bus won’t support it. Looks like I know my rear diff ratio, transmission, and engine. Any other details I should look for? Does driveline matter? If so, where do I look to find the associated label?

3). Assuming I can eliminate or increase my governor speed, unlock my 6th gear, what final speed is expected? Is this safe for the bus? Would I need new tires? Does gas mileage decrease?

Thanks everyone! This is a huge help!

To unlock 6th gear…. Info

https://pcmperformance.com/TCMs.html

per website, 500KB ROM WTEC3s = part number 29537291 or higher.

Take a look at your TCM, it has a label on it.
If your part number is lower than the one listed above it will have the smaller PROM and cannot support the 6th gear unlock.

Depending on what year your bus is you will probably need to upgrade the TCM.

Md3060 spec sheet - https://www.dal-trans.com.au/files/MD-3060-MD-3560.pdf

Go under your bus, take a look and save $500 bucks!
