DT466 speed increase, governor removal
Hello all,
New to the community. I googled and googed 'til my googler was sore and still haven't found what it is I'm looking for.
I just picked up a 2005 IC FE300 with the DT466 and Allison 2000 combo. The bus is a beast but is stopped cold by a 60mph/2100rpm limiter. Anyone have any suggestions on best way/least expensive way to overcome this limit?
In the South Eastern Texas area.
Thanks in advance!

You need more gear for starters. What size tires do you have and what is the rear axle ratio?

So the 245 tires are 37 inch tall and the 295 tires are 40 inches tall or 8 % more gear. That would put you at about 65 mph. If you went to 11 r 24,5 those are 44 inches and some are 45 inches or 18% or 71 mph. This is done a lot here in the oilfields on big trucks because the insurance companies want trucks limited to 65 mph. So they order the lo pro tires governed to 65 mph and change them out with 24,5 later. I did it on my bus for the 10% gain. Whatever the speedometer says I add 10% to. But to start with you need to know what is on it now. That is more than likely a 5 speed transmission not the 6 speed. I think it came out later. Not sure. Then there is the ring and pinion swap to change the overall gearing.

Same combo we have in our bus. We have the shorter tires (255/70x22.5) but given it was a handicap bus it has a flat floor with no wheel humps in the back. We have a 4.7:1 rear end and do about 65 at 2100rpm.
As for the limiter and cruise, you'll need to go to an International dealer/repair shop and have them plug it into their computer. We simply had the limiter removed although they could set it to whatever speed you want.
I also ended up relocating the cruise switches since their original location way over towards the center of the dash was not convenient when driving.

All good stuff, I appreciate y'all's response. The tires seem easy enough. Should Def probably swap out the 6.17 rear end with something a little higher and have dealership remove speed limiter. 60 mph doesn't cut it...

We (Power Hungry) offer an inexpensive version of the Orion package that will allow you to change your optional parameters including the Speed Limiter. It includes the capability of reading and clearing DTCs and will very shortly have full datalogging capabilities. It just doesn't allow for changing the power level or reflashing the ECM. The "Lite" package is $199.00 including the hardware.
If you are looking to step up performance, you can also go for the full Orion package which allows you to reflash your ECM and be able to select from 7 different power levels. This package runs $850 including the hardware, and will reflash the ECM only. If you also want to update the ICM (Injection Driver Module), the full package is $1000. Again, it includes the capability of changing all the vehicle parameters as well as DTC diagnostics.
Just for reference, I have a 2005 DT466 engine in my bus and was able to turn it up from 250 HP (factory) to right at 450 HP. Now, I do have it turned down a bit as I don't need that much, but the capability is there. Throttle response is amazing and fuel economy is up almost 2 MPG.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Oh will I be letting you know when I have questions Bill. Sounds too good to be true. Would still probably need to regear that rear-end though. Your elite package electronically regear? jk

Regearing is a mechanical function and is a decision based on what you're looking to achieve for RPM at a specific MPH. Whether or not your trans has 6th gear unlocked will weigh heavily into this as well.
Once you have determined what gears you're needing and have them installed, the software can correct the parameters so that the speedo and shifting are corrected appropriately.

regearing
What is meant by "regearing" is that you take that big lump in the middle of the rear axle on your bus and remove it, then you replace it with a lump - also called, a differential, with another "diff" with different gears.
If you have a rare four wheel drive bus, then you do that with front differential too.
A 6.17 rear gear means the driveshaft turns 6.17 times and the wheel turns once. This is good for getting heavy loads up a hill.
a 3.73 gear, the drive shaft turns 3.73 times and the wheel turns once, good for cruising down the highway with engine turning slower, but not so good for steep hills.
swapping differentials is the easy way. You can, in some cases, keep the carrier and swap out the gears in the carrier. That takes more skill and knowledge to get it correct.

Though I'm aware of all that, I still appreciate the insight William! I definitely don't think I'll be trekking mtns enough for 6.17s though and it won't be a house on wheels.

If you’re limited to 60mph that sounds like a programming issue. Instead of replacing expensive parts, why not download ServiceMaxx 1708 for free, buy a $100 Chinese nexiq clone and change the parameters yourself? It’s super simple - I do it all the time. If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

I know the ServiceMaxx 1708 works with the 444E...but does it also work with the DT466? If so, I didn't realize that and it would be very cool. I'm definitely not "questioning you" here...I am a novice when it comes to the electronic engine controls...so I'm hoping to learn more about the capabilities.

it works with any of the 'E' engines.. the free version will do the common 444E,466E, VT365, it will not do the Maxxforce engines.. (you need the God mode version for those)

I have 2002 bus with DT466 and Allison 2000. Using a Nexiq usb link scanner ($179 for chinese knockoff found on Obd2eshop.com) and free Navistar software (ServiceMaxx J1708 ) which is free at https://navistarservice.snapon.com/S...Number=SM-1708
I was able to go in and change my max speed. Mine was set at 60 mph...I bumped it up to 75 mph. At 75 mph I'm running at a hair over 2,200 rpm. I typically don't run the bus over 70 mph but nice to have that extra 5 mph if you need it. Above that things happen to fast with these beasts and as stated...it's not great for these engines to be running at high rpm for long periods of time.

Cadillackid - You should try connecting smaxx to a MaxxForce sometime. It’s not supposed to work, but it does. Just select the dlc2 i6 option and it will give you most of the programming capabilities (not diag capabilities) that you would get in Navistar Engine Diagnostics software (intended for 1939 engines). I’ve used smaxx to change parameters on a 2009 big bore maxxforce & on 2010 & 2013 DT/9/10.

Interesting it never wanted to correctly connect to a maxxforce DT (10).
Now my god mode servicemaxx does and even on an MF I can change everything including HP , I haven’t tried to delete with it but it should with an export Cal file
