DT466E Air Intake Location

I stop. ped by the local experienced diesel mechanic shop today for pointers on priming the DT466E. I mentioned the starting fluid concerns some have and he jumped all over me about what bunch of BS that was. If "used properly", there is no harm done with SF. I mentioned grid heaters and he said even if you turned it on and didn't fire it for 15 minutes and the grid was hot it still wouldn't damage.
So I stopped and got some starting fluid on the way home. I need an accurate answer for my particular model of bus, as to where the air intake is on this thing. I crawled under the bus and see the canister containing the filter, but see no intake openings. Where does the air enter the filter box? I said I'd have someone spray while I cranked. He said no, have them crank and you spray. I knew what he meant.

Yeah, "used properly". If you have to come on a forum and ask, you don't understand what you're doing or know how to use it properly.

I've seen broken rings, pistons, etc because of starting fluid use.

Spraying a highly flammable liquid on a piece of steel that is glowing orange from heat will cause that liquid to combust.

Spraying starting fluid into the air filter means the fluid has to travel through the filter, past the turbo, through the intercooler and all it's piping and then into the intake. That's where the grid heater is at, so when it hits the cherry red grid heater and lights off, it burns the fluid all the way back to the can.

That's a lot of fluid in a contained environment. There's a reason most manufacturers put a big label near the air cleaner saying not to use liquid starting aids.

But wtf do they or I know for that matter.

Unless the engine was designed to be used with ether injection, it shouldn't need ether.

I've changed countless pumps, and injectors requiring both the fuel and oil systems to require complete priming. Not once have I needed to use ether to do it.
