Fluids checking and filling, transmission Allison 2500

My 2008 IC CE-300 bus has an Allison 2500 tranny. I just brought it home and after two days sitting I started checking fluids. The engine oil is OK, but the transmission fluid doesn't even register on the dipstick. Is this because the tranny must be warm when checking it? There are no signs of leaks anywhere, either at the site of the seller or in my driveway.

Flat level ground? Engine running?

It should show up on the dipstick hot or cold, and there should be a cold fill range and a hot fill range on the dipstick.

Engine not running, cold. I didn't see the markings on the tranny dipstick, I just saw no fluid and that worries me. I will check again and add fluid.

Engine has to be running.

Typically with it off it will read way over full. But anything is possible I guess.

The dipstick should be marked, look closer for the etching.

What power steering fluid does this bus use? Reservoir needs to be topped off.

It should say on or near the reservoir/dipstick

They've used a lot of different fluids over the years, from engine oil to transmission fluid.

For top off purposes, you can't go wrong with generic power steering fluid from a parts store. Avoid anything with stop leak wrote on it. It's not needed and can actually make any weeping/leaking worse.

It doesn't say. I spoke to the mechanic of the company that sold it to me and he said to use the same ATF that I would use with the transmission.
