glow or no glow plugs

looking at my dash and not but driven this bus but home. I don't see a glow plug light? Do these dt466 not have glow plugs.

It fires right off after not running for a few days so i think it doesn't have them. To lazy to look.

the DT-360 and mechanical DT-466 do not have glow plugs or grid heaters..

if you live in a cold climate it should have a block heater to plug it in...

ive seen people start the DT's at 10 degrees outside just on their own though..

Ive got a DT-360 and a T-444E.. each has its purpose and merit..

the beauty of my T-444E is that my bus has nop doghouse.. this my legs dont burn when driving on hot summer days.. and I dont have that massive doghouse in the interior..

the DT-360 is super simplistic and easy to work on.. plus can be rebuilt in-frame if it wears out...

the DT-360 is super strong and powerful off the line at Low RPM/ but runs out of steam fairly quickly..

the T-444E gives me better highway power when im at the top range of the RPM band.. and also responds quicker on the foot when i need a little go to pass a car or truck..

the turbo spools much quicker on the T-444E.. buit the DT-360 has much more low end torque so it gets the bus moving quickly when i need ot pull into traffic..

AFIK: The Ford 6.9 was a naturally aspirated V8. The DT360 is a turbocharged inline six. Same family with the DT408, DT466 and DT508.

what makes it a 508? stroked crank, injector size and pistons. I read you can build it when you over haul. I did realize this six went smaller.

This ended up being a big plus for putting two passenger seats at the front of the bus. There's plenty of room up there to work with. I think it's extra important for those with shorties. Even though I occasionally get DT466e envy, my T444e does all I ask of it And yes, I meant to put that 'e' there. While not in tune with the vast majority here, I prefer an electrically controlled engine. Me and the electric pixies just get along..

A funny thing. I was just thinking to myself not a half hour ago that it'd be nice to see a comparison review off your DT360 vs T444e. And then here it is!

As for glow plugs, it seems that inline sixes are less likely to need glow plugs than V8s. Something about the stroke length and surface area for heat transfer, I think.

Only diesels I ever saw with glow plugs were the old Ford shuttle buses I drove back in the mid-90s... can't remember what was in them but they were E-350 van front ends on what I believe was a motorhome chassis with a bus body bolted on.... 5 rows of 4 with a row of 5 at the back. But on the dash was a "WAIT TO START" light which only really came on the first time it was started each day, or in the wintertime it would come on after sitting for an hour or two of not running.

And some of the older U-Haul diesel trucks had them too.... though I usually ended up with a gasser so I didn't have to worry about it. Usually only got a diesel if it was a one-way move over a long distance.... though what they charge for one way moves now... yikes.

As I recall, the 6.9 and 7.3 IH/Ford engines have glow plugs (and the "wait to start" light). I believe the 5.9 Cummins engine has a grid heater (serves much the same purpose) and works much the same way as far as "wait to start". The IH 9 Liter (V and various DT-straight-sixes don't have glow plugs and at least the 9L was rated to start down to -10 degrees.

I was wonderin' about this, as I have not located anything regarding glow plugs...

But, I'm scratching my head about one switch labeled "Thermo Control"...
And I have a momentary push button switch on the right side of steering wheel labeled "ETHER"

The ambulance was originally stationed in Virginia, now resides in Oklahoma.

That ether button was probably wired to a tank of ether to be used as a starting aid without having to leave the cab (push the button on the wheel while cranking the engine), similar to a nitrous injector.

That other one, though, I have no clue about.....

maybe the thermo control is part of the air conditionng?

my T-444E has the glowplugs and no block heater (Texas Bus).. and my DT-360 has NO glow plugs but has a block heater.. (Ohio Bus)..
