Sorry. I don't know anything about GM/GMC programming.

Potentially nothing, can't say I've heard of a speed limiter on cutaway vans. How fast will it run right now?

Can HP be increased using nexiq? I too need to adjust my governor and if I can do some tweaking to gain a little more HP I would buy the nexiq. Can someone give me some insight as to how much of a rocket scientist I'd have to be in order to make purchasing the software worth it? Thanks!

HP bumps aren't as easy as enabling the cruise but CadillacKid may be able to walk you through it if you can get the software.
OP has a van that's way different than a medium duty rig.

Thanks. I'll do some digging and if I purchase I'll look him up

I'm also interested in removing my governor, increasing hp and unlocking my 6th gear!? It's governed at 55. Would hitting 70 be unreasonable ? I'll provide the last 8 of vin if available to help. Thanks in advance.

OK, I am probably not the only one to get a chuckle...

I read "governor removal" and I immediately thought, yeah, that's what elections are for. Or impeachments, I suppose, not sure if those happen often at a state level.

OK, back to the regularly programmed non-political thought... I think I need more coffee.

Hello I have a 1995 bluebird international navistar 3444 and really want to reprogram or remove the 55mph governor. Anyone have any ideas on who I can contact? I have a diesel mechanic who has done it before but said he couldn’t find a place to connect the computer. Is it possible I covered it up with flooring? Any info will help. Thanks!

2001 DT466E Speed Governor Removal

Hello -

I recently acquired a 2001 DT466E, engine seems to be in decent condition, however it won't go past 60mph even if you have the accelerator pedal on the floor.

People have been telling me that it may have a Speed Governor on it, is there a way to modify so that I can go up to 70mph or 75mph?

Any help guidance will be much appreciated. I am in DFW Metroplex in Grand Prairie.

Best,

Sajeed

Sajeed, We need a few more details. What is the rear axle ratio and what are the particulars for the transmission?

In addition, what are the engine RPMs at 60 mph?

Can we make it go faster? Sure, it just might cost a lot more than ECM parameter tweak.

These threads should literally have a requirement for posting this question or question about top speed, more hp, Faster, etc.

You simply must include

1. Year and Engine of bus
2. Transmission
3. Rear end gear ratio

without it even all of the most helpful of folks are just guessing in regards to YOUR specific rig.

I had a T4444E and an allison AT545 with a rear end ratio of 4.78

I was like most "speed limited" by the ECM programming. only older buses have the old governor like most are thinking in their heads, for the most part. Our buses require a laptop to plug in and change the setting and simple as that. (again YOUR bus may of course vary, but for the most part )

However I was running 55mph, at 5400-5500 rpm screaming. I didn't know anything at the time, paid IH dealer the $145 and they changed the setting to 85, and enabled the cruise control which is also a setting.

Happy and expecting more smiles down the highway I was pleasantly surprised with a whopping top speed of 57 mph, and 5600 rpm near maxed out.

And so I learned quickly about my transmission (AT545 sucks, and is a 1:1) and Gear ratios. The larger the number your rear end is, the slower you are going. PERIOD!

I also learned my T444E likes to be 2000-2200 revs to sing like a happy fat lady. more is pushing it, just beats on it

In the end I personally went pretty extreme and I swapped custom swapped out my AT545 transmission for an Allison 2000. With the 5th gear being an OD of .74 my new numbers are a cruising speed of 64 mph at 2000 revs and right in that sweet spot, and ideal mileage.

Top speed is just shy of 80 and then I am pretty much at peak torque at 2400 revs. I might squeeze a few more, but it's rather sketchy at that speed being a bus.

Increasing HP is, as pointed out, a little trickier, and in some case may do more harm than good. Caddillac kid goes into detail about turning up the heat and the pros/cons of that. I am running still at 175hp. I am unsure also what benefit I get with my new setup by doing so and am still researching.

I hope this helps some... I am no "expert" at all but I have read every AT545 thread on the interwebs before I did my swap so I learned a bunch. I also stayed at a Holiday Inn Express before attempting it.

most important is to find out what your engine likes to run best at... You cannot go faster than the math

Again if you want GOOD answers for YOUR RIG
You simply must include

1. Year and Engine of bus
2. Transmission
3. Rear end gear ratio

cheers lads
