looking for an IDM
Hi
I've posted here before about how my 97 international w Dt466e won't start again after changing the fuel filters. We finally had a mechanic come and told us it was the IDM. Our local International dealer wants $1150 for rebuilding it. I'm trying to find a replacement for less. Or am I stuck w having to go through the dealer?😕
Also, is there an IDM relay somewhere? I thought I heard someone on a youtube video mention it.
Thank you, any input is always GREATLY appreciated!🙏🏽

is your DT-466E a "3 box" has a separate IDM? or does it have the single computer hanging off the side of the engine wit hthe 2 large connectors on it? 97 was the pivotal yeaer for switching from separate IDM's to the NAVPak single computer..
the single computer has the IDM built in and im told not easily replaceable.. the 3 box system used a separate IDM and is pretty easy to swap out..
the single Pack ECMs were gebnerally the same for T-444E and DT-466E..
However..
DONT BUY A T-444E SINGLE BOX ECM AND TRY TO START THE ENGINE WITHOUT FLASHING IT FOR YOUR 466E!!!!!
the 444E is a V8, the 466E is an I-6.. things will go bad.. you can plug it in, key on, flash it with NavKal, clear the codes and it will work..
I dont have a lot of info on parts crossing for 3 box stuff.. since it was obasoleted for the most part after the 96/97 model year it gets trickier to find info on it .. my Navistar electronic documentation seems to start with 97 and not much before that..

Also looking for an IDM, 1996 7.3 Navistar, International 3800
Hello All,
Having trouble finding a replacement IDM for my 1996 International 3800 with a 7.3 Navistar. International dealers near me say the part is discontinued (of course, its old) and to look for a remanufactured one. They can't tell me what model years of IDMs would be programmed the same as a 96' International 3800/7.3 Navistar combo.
Anyone know which years are programmed the same? Or where to get an IDM that will work or one close enough that I can get reprogrammed? I'm on Vancouver Island, Canada. Any leads to this in the US or Canada I'll follow up on, thanks,
Adrian

It's not about the years, but about which program your computer system received last. Original versions won't work with later versions. The 3 Box system has to have items within a range of firmware versions. If the versions are too far off, the replacement IDM will not work. Your cheapest option will be to obtain an IDM from a Truck or Bus from the same year and same engine. 1994-1997 are your best bets.
Once you obtain it. (Try ebay). You can attempt to plug it in, and see if it runs. If it does not then it's going to require a flash by International dealership which will likely cost you $400 for the flash. But if you were lucky and got one with the right firmware you won't even need a flash, it will just work.
So the cheapest options for you are the ebay route without a flash, but expect you may need a flash to upgrade the firmware of your ebay purchased IDM.
If you get an IDM from same year but with different engine that will not work and cause havok. Don't do it. If it's a question, don't buy it. Make sure it came from the same engine from those years.
I went through this with my VPM. (One of the 3 computers, and it's the same concept for the IDM.) The firmware has to be within range.
You also may be able to find dead broken international trucks within those years, for $500 that don't run but it may have a working IDM. I'd check facebook marketplace for a parts truck potentially.

IDM part number
According to International up here in Western Canada, part number is 1807248C3. Also International lists these as EDM (engine driver module) as well as IDM

Not sure you may find a better deal somewhere but search here, they have a used one. I bought my bus from these guys and trust them.

I remember reading along time ago the you can use a international IDM on a Ford but you had to repin the plug accordingly. You would need to find the pinouts for both international and Ford to do so. I never looked into it other then some random reading.
Otherwise for the most part.....my best understanding the IDM does not talk back to the vpm or ECM. It only does what it's told to do. It's a driver.

I have the same engine as you DT466E in my bus, its newer 2006 ce300 dog nose. We had the IDM relay go bad and caused the bus to keep cutting out and not starting.
When i plugged it in to servicemax it came up with a code and 'IDM relay low voltage', i changed the relay £70 for a new one and its been fine since.
On my bus the relay is located under the bonnet up on the firewall under the windscreen, theres a few different relays there mine are all labelled.

I replaced all 3 of those relays when I first bought the bus because I saw a video where those can cause issues, and it was like $15 total to replace them with new ones.
