Misc. DT466E Questions Filter, Loose Wire Oil Pump, Coolant

Just bought my bus. I have a few rando questions:
  1. First off the bus will shutoff sometimes at idle. Runs well under load. PO reported having trouble getting fuel filter on and that "there might be air". 1st pic.
  2. What is this wire on top of what I think is the oil pump. looks like it shoudl be attached. 2nd and 3rd pic
  3. Looks like my radiator might be leaking? this is the left one? not sure how many I have. I have heard one might be for oil or transmission
  4. How do I know what type of coolant I need? I have heard mixing is not good. This appears red but who knows. Pic is from top of reservoir. It is well below the fill mark. Also heard of filters with SCA's and without. Anyway to know for sure.
  5. Anyone know how to get wiring diagram. I have asked Thomas. Got a manual but no wiring diagram.

1. Need more info for the cutting off. Maybe any codes stored in ecm, recent maintenance performed, etc. Could be cross threaded filter but I would suspect it would have a leak.
Here is a picture of a bus I have. The filter is crooked but it runs fine.

2. See post #12 and #23 in this thread. #12 has a pic of a filter positioned like yours. #23 describes the wire that needs to be replaced.

3. Sounds like a split radiator. If facing radiator from front the left side is the radiator and the right is the air cooler for the turbo. You could pressure test to verify a coolant leak. I found it to be cheaper to buy new than repair.

4. If(when) you replace the radiator, completely flush engine and go with new coolant. I used Final Charge Global because I couldn't find any info as what to use for this yr model engine. A lot of good opinions from experience yes, but nothing from manufacturer. Use a coolant filter with no additives. Hastings WC8 is what I used.

5. Good luck. You can find info on the major components of the bus but I gave up on wiring from that year.

Check for codes regarding your idle shut off. Also, some buses have shutoff timers that will shut the engine down if left idling for a certain amount of time. So check for that. If both of those were strike outs, then you can check for air in fuel, but I doubt you'd have that issue on a dt466e. You'd most likely have a no-start issue with air in fuel on an E engine. Honestly I'd throw a cam sensor at it before I'd check for air in fuel. Also, the fuel filter is on the suction side of the system, so leaks very likely won't show up as wet spots.

Your wire is for the low air alarm. Get that fixed for sure, and afterwards dump the air in the tanks and make sure it comes on. That's a big safety issue.

Your radiator is rusted out and leaking. To fix it you replace the radiator. A 1999 shouldn't require an elc, but you can put one in if you'd like. The coolant filter you use depends on the antifreeze used, whatever you use make sure they're compatible with one another. The # on the filter will tell you what it is. Being red it's likely an elc, but you can flush with water and then refill with whatever coolant you prefer, and then change the filter to match it.

What is the best way to flush? My current filter is a LFW4071. When I google that it looks like its equivalent is WIX 24071. Can't tell if that has additive or not. Is that the no additive one?

Also i have some lines coming from my transmission that appear to be transmission fluid going up to the radiator area. I assume this is a transmission cooler (good to have with my AT545)that is somewhere in the mix up there? Once I figure out if this is part of coolant or not, i can take transmission questions onto separate thread.

Trying to figure out the best path as far as sequence. Don't want to do oil change then have to replace air compressor which requires oil change (oil cooled right?). same with coolant. same with radiator / trans fluid heat exchanger.

4071 has additive in it. Using an elc you wouldn't want to use that filter. To swap from conventional to elc, you flush with cascade dishmachine gel and water, then you flush that with a bunch more water. Then swap the filter, add enough coolant to create your correct freeze point, then you're good to go.

If the lines leave the top passenger side of the transmission and go to the radiator, then there's a good chance those are you cooler lines.

Changing the radiator wouldn't require you to change the oil or transmission fluid, so long as you don't mix the fluids, or the cooler aren't leaking.

Change radiator, flush system, replace filter, add antifreeze and water until the freezepoint is correct. Check your other fluids so they're at the correct level, roll on with it. Not sure why you're replacing the air compressor?

My bus dies when idling also, same engine. Don't know why...

My bus (96 international DT446E shorty) also shuts off at idle. I bought the manual on eBay and it's great, it shows the wiring diagram, but it's so difficult to understand, I haven't tried. I like it for the maintenance checklist and photos of parts and functions of the engine to help with routine checks and proper maintenance of the parts.


Best of luck, hope someone on here can solve the question as to why it dies at idle. For me, about 20% of the time when sitting. I'm converting and don't drive often so I just turn it on once/month or so.

I've done an oil change, filter change (both oil filters and fuel filter) a couple years ago (haven't driven since due to long conversion time). Coolant flush a couple years ago. My bus engine also squeaks/squeals when running on idle...probably a squeaky belt I need to look into.
