Not able to get engine over 1500 rpm.

Sorry this is so long but I wanted to provide as much information as possible. I am still learning about diesel engines so any information is appreciated.

Ok so I have a 97 international T444E with about 213,000 miles. I do have anti-gel additive in the fuel. The bus started ok after I let the engine heater warm it up for about 35-45 minutes and I let the glow plugs warm up longer than normal. The temp was in the mid 30s.
I drove it about 5 miles to the hardware store without issue to pickup some 16 foot moulding that wouldn't fit in the mini-van. Turned off the engine for about 5 minutes whole loading. It started up easily when leaving. As I pulled out of the parking lot that is when I was unable to get above 15 mph and 1500 rpm. I put it in neutral and tried to rev it up but still nothing above 1500. I limped home with the hazards on, I am sure I pissed off some people by going 10 mph up the few hills LOL. There seemed to not be an issue with power the engine was putting out as I was able to make it up fairly steep hills, just not fast. I was able to put it in neutral and coast downhill at 30+ mph. Once up to speed I put it back into drive and was able to get out of 1st or 2nd gear.

Engine oil level is good.

How hast do injectors go bad? Could this be the problem?

I do have some codes from the ScanGauge-D but they don't seem to match any of the codes for international. Maybe I am not reading or converting them properly.

Thanks for any help you can provide

Was it making extra noise? Blowing smoke? When my EBPV was sticking my bus ran awfully, and was belching black smoke and loud as hell. Easy fix if that's the problem.

Yea I am glad it did not just stop. I would hate to pay to have it towed home or to a shop being so close to home. I am going to call linear logic ,the maker's of ScanGauge, to see what they can tell me about the codes.

A turbo engine will act that way if one of the turbo noses has slipped off or the turbo is not working.

I believe if the ICP is bad you can just disconnect it and it will throw a code and run at a default setting.

Thanks for the info. I will call to see what's up with the 2 digit codes.

When you say run at default settings is that limp mode or "regular/normal" ?

Default would be (in theory) closer to normal than limp home mode. I don't know if the ICP aloe is enough to trigger limp home mode.

navistar has a lot of proprietary data it sends down the J1708 link so your codes dont match up well.. you can pull codes usingf the light flash method by turning the key to ON and pressing the diagnistic button by the connector.. then count the flash patterns the WARN and OIL / WATER light give you..

I would if I could. LOL that is one of the dash lights that is not currently working. I am planning on getting the gash circuit board redone. Maybe I can switch some lights around and get it working.

Sounds like ICP or IPR. Make sure your fuel filter isn't clogged too.

Thanks, I have been meaning to change or at least check the fuel filter since I have no idea when it was changed last. I just got an oil filter but have not changed that yet. It will be in the 50s this weekend so I will try to get some filters changed.

Thanks for the list of things to check. I will send an up date on what I find as I test them.

change the oil while changing the oil filter... its a HEUI engine.. clean oil is paramount since it is used as Hydraulic fluid to actuate the injectors..

Thanks Chris.
I actually bought the oil before I got the filter. Shell has a $20 rebate until the end of the year for 5 gallons. The oil is dark but that might be normal for a diesel after a few miles.

How much was that oil?
Looks like I may have to jump on that deal. Just checked, Shell is offering $7/g rebate, $35 on a 5 gallon bucket. I can get the bucket at O'Reilly's for $144 for the synthetic, or $90 for conventional. I think the rebate may be on the synthetic only.
O'Reilly has the 2.5 gallon on sale for $67.47, or $10 cheaper for the total 5 gallons. Not a discount to sneeze at.
