Pulliing carrier assembly question

Hey everyone,

I pulled my axles away from the carrier assembly, removed pinon gear.
Removed all of the carrier assembly bolts, The carrier is loose but having some issues in removing it.

I have tried to lift with a floor jack and wiggle it out. It is hanging up and too heavy to lift by hand.

It appears to be hanging up on the cast side material and ring gear, not much space.

Any suggestions on the best way to remove the carrier assembly?

Sounds like it’s all ready to come out axel removed drive line drop & all bolts & nuts removed take a small hammer & screw driver & split carrier from housing it will be heavy hold up with floor jack & work it loose …. PS BE SURE TO DRAIN OIL FIRST OR u will hav a big mess to clean up

Thanks @Diesel_bus_fun, Yup oil was first thing I did. Carrier is loose. Been wiggling with floor jack under the lip of the carrier assembly. I will try again, It is being very stubborn to get out.

Take some long bolts. Cut the heads off them. Use a hack saw or cutting wheel. Cut a slot on the ends so you can screw them in to the housing with a flat screw driver. Say roughly 6 of them. Then use two long bolts with heads and screw those in. Think 3 or 4 inch bolt. The ones with heads will limit your travel......how far it will come out till your ready to do the final pull.

These will be your guide pins. Then you can slide it out some with the help of a jack so it should be high enough for the ring to pass the bottom of the housing.

Please be carefully. That thing falls and lands on your head......it'll kill you.

DONT use hardened bolts.. yes they are stronger but you dont want to shank a hardened bot flush.. it will be a &^%$ to drill out... a regular floor jack didnt do it for me when I poulled mine out (RA39).. its about 350 lbs.. I used a tranny jack where I could chain the punkin to the jack platform and tilt it around while I pulled the jack.. I used guide bolts on the way back in.. I also had a ratchet strap under it to lift up a bit.. the ratchet strap was between the frame rails.

The floor jack scares the hell out of me.

I like to use ratchet straps to hang it, vs a floor jack to teeter it on. Seems to be easier and safer jmo.

Trans jacks are top choice, especially if you fab a bracket to bolt the pumpkin too like I have. The jack will have angularity adjustment which makes it easy to slide and orient any way you'd like. However, they aren't worth a $hit if you're on anything but smooth clean concrete. That's why I recommend ratchet straps from above instead.

Ratchet straps work. I know an old school mechanic that used ratchet straps on a 13 speed. Hung it in frame, used another to pull it back enough to replace the clutch in a truck stop.

I took the same idea on my pick up truck trans. But of a pain to lower down but not bad with a car jack

I used a mix of ratchet straps and tranny jack to do both of my transmission swaps and the punkin swap.. . the tranny jack wheels on blacktop were a bit of a pain.. for the trany swaps i used a third strap tied to the bus front axle to pull them forweard a little at a time as it went on the guide bolts,, since the punkin was small enough and pretty stable I just did some kick action to move the jack
