Scan tool for 2006 dt466e

Hi folks, looking for info on a diesel scan tool for the 2006 dt466e international / navistar engine in a ce 300 international school bus. I would like to find a bi- directional scanner tool to do injector buzz test and cylinder contribution test amongst other things before pulling the trigger on all new injectors

Great engine, it's my favorite!!

The best tool is servicemaxx j1708 downloaded from free from Snapon International's website.

https://navistarservice.snapon.com/S...Number=SM-1708

You just need a windows tablet or laptop to run it on, then buy a NexIQ USB adapter. Legit ones are about $600 but the chinese knockoffs usually work ok too as long as you don't try to update firmware on them.

This is really great news I must say I'm in shock though... it's free. What's the catch. I must have to pay something. If not why not. I'm down with it though I have a lap top and I can easily get the nexIq $600.00 is not to much for the benefit recieved. I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

The catch is it only works on pre-maxxforce engines. After about 2008 the newer version of that software requires an annual subscription. Basically they just started giving the old version away for free.

Another question... sorry but will it work with a wifi nexiq as well. You see I don't have internet and may have to go download the software over internet at say Starbucks or someplace will the software still work please forgive my ignorance.

Once you download the Servicemaxx app to your machine you don't need a live internet connection once you connect to your bus so the wired, bluetooth, or wifi verisons should all work.

Ah i see what your saying now. Thanks so much. Probably going to stay with wired and that's it then. I see no benefit to the wifi or Bluetooth. Thanks again for your time and knowledge I really appreciate it.

So I downloaded snap on servicemaxx software and I ordered a nexiq link but there is some question as to whether or not it is coming with a 6 pin & a 9 pin connector or just a 9 pin connector. I have a 6 pin connector exposed under my dash empty just hanging there and I have a 9 pin connector that is connected to something which connector do I use on a 2006 ce school bus from international with a dt466e 7.6L engine any help would be appreciated

So I was telling cadillackid I got the nexiq usb link 2 and seems it's only coming with a 9pin pig no 6 pin so I looked under my dash and it appears I have a 6 pin and a 9 pin connector that go to a wire that goes nowhere it's just wound up under the right hand side of the dash over the stair well of the bus. In assuming it went to a child safety unit that they removed from the bus so I'm hoping I can unplug the 9 pin connector and plug in my nexiq usb link 2 to that 9 pin female plug under the middle of the dash next to the bendix brake reset switch

interesting you have both connectors.. the 9 pin standard is designed to support both J1708 and J1939 protocols. . you can get an adapter.. what I would do is get the nexiq with its 9 pin, connect it and see if you can read the engine.. if you cant then get the adapter 6 to 9.

I investigated more when I realized my 6 pin connector had male end and I found that both the 6 pin and 9 pin connector I have are from a loose wire that is rolled up behind the dash on the right side over the stair well. It appears these 2 plugs went to a child safety system for first student buses. So I can disconnect the 9 pin plug and remove the excess harness that contains both the 6 pin and 9 pin connectors as this harness is not hooked to anything at all. That will leave me with an empty 9 pin female socket that I hope allows the nexiq usb link 2 to function for me thanks again to all you guys for your help.

My NexIQ came with a cord that had both the 6 and 9 pin ends on it. Every 2000s era international bus I've seen has a 9 pin round pin connector. On the CE series the port is to the right of the steering wheel under the dash (above the radio controls). The FE/REs have them to the left of the steering wheel. The REs usually have one in the engine compartment fuse box as well.

Right you are mine is right in the middle where you say. My confusion was the 9 pin had a plug in it already... come to find out it went to child safety equipment that had been removed so its plugged into nothing removed it and will plug my nexiq in there when it arrives. I really appreciate all you folks help btw. Thanks again

So the harness I had under dash was for zonar GPS location equipment. I removed it and the new nexiq plugged into 9 pin adapter works. I was even able to connect with my phone through bluetooth. Did an injector buzz test and that worked but I'm camping now so play with it more when I get home thanks a bunch guys... BTW I downloaded the software drivers for nexiq usb link2 at the library outside while it was closed with my lap top so that works

Did you make it back home yet?! I asked this same question a when back but no one mentioned the free software. Someone on youtube told me about it and didn't know it was now free. I was thinking about getting a nexiq as well. Might get a knockoff one for now to see how it works and maybe upgrade to the real deal. I think I have an injector problem as well but wanted to get a tool like nexiq to help me out

Hey anyone know, would this same setup work on my 2001 Cummins?

As far as I know, no. I think the nexiq will work to connect, but Cummins has a software called insight but it's not free. Some of the Chinese knockoff nexiq will come with a bootleg copy of insight though.
