screaming banshee under the hood

So I took the bus out for a quick little joyride, and I thought I heard a funny noise (my hearing is pretty much shot), but pretty quick it turned into a banshee screaming like a distressed ape, and then, just as quick it faded and went away. I was only about 15 minutes getting back to the barn, with no more noise. It struck me that the turbocharger is the only thing turning fast enough to make that high pitch scream. Can a turbo scream like that for about 90 seconds, then quiet down again?

Could be cooling fan. If engine driven it could be niosey itself,although the way you describe it sounds like fan clutch or more likely belts slipping when it comes on, then when it goes back off all is well again. Anyway this is where I would start looking.

One of mine did that. Squeal, SCREAM, Bang, Quiet. It was the brake compressor siezing up and breaking the belt. Ran 12 miles back with no oil pressure.
