it appeared to be the solution to a lot of issues which was the idea of a drop-in for an AT545 with lockup.. I remember there being major differences in the land of the converter offset and bolt patterns..

a MT643 swap wasnt too bad.. I did one and it was well worth it..
If LKQ still has those 643's for $650 Cal ought to jump on it.

I have MT647 not a 653 already but I am saving it for the 1997 Intl for my next life. I will look into the problems of the AT1545. Any input is welcome. I know the unit is rebuilt though.

Does the dt408 have a SAE 2 or 3 housing?

dt408 is an SAE2 engine... with a 545 attached you will have a SAE2 to SAE3 adapter ring..

does your 408 have serpentine belt or V-belts for the accessories?

If you have an at545 installed. You'll likely have an sae2 housing necked down to sae3 size with an adaptor.

Turf was the one who installed an at1545. He ran into issues finding parts for the swap. The 1545 was only available behind cat engines in a military application. So using one with a cummins or international will require custom parts, mainly a spacer of some sort to adapt the flywheel to the torque converter.

The only reason I mentioned the 1545 was because I thought he had a fresh one somewhere.

Behind a dt408, he could go with an mt series trans and it would likely require no custom parts. But he'd have to buy an mt trans. I think those rebuilt ones for 500 bucks at lkq are all gone IIRC.

they still show as having quite a few of them

https://www.lkqheavytruck.com/part-d...ON&model=MT643

if you get serious about it i can get you the part numbers for the flex-plate that I acquired to do the swap...

mechanically I removed my SAE 2-3 ring, the old flexplate, the spacer hub..

installed new flexplate, shorter flywheel bolts.. new cooling lines, shortened driveshaft, drilled new holes in shifter cable bracket.., lengthen speed sensor wires..

reused reverse light sensor, neutral safety switch, dipstick, speed sensor,

**SPEED SENSOR NOTES **
these reman trans came with either a tone ring for an electric speedometer (navistar 3800s all have electric).. or as speedo gear for a cable speedo... get the right one or you have to swap your tone ring from the old tranny which uses some special tools.

you can see the manufacturer part number on LKQ site.. i posted an example.. they have multiples.. you can call navistar dealer and ask details for said part number..

these transmissions were Navistar ReNewed brand so they have navistar part number.. they were obsoleted from Navistar after the 15 years went by since the MT643 was made new...

so far im about 7000 miles in with my reman 643 from there and it works perfect..

it may be the same one as used on an MD3060..

around 94 Navistar revamped the 466 and I believe 408 to be what was called NGD (Next Generation Diesel).. these were still mechanical engines.. but they got different cranks which have 12 bolt flywheels... previous versions have 8 bolt flywheels.. since the DTA360 was dropped aftewr the 93 model year all of them have 8 bolt..

the NGD 408/466's also got serpentine belt drive.. NGD would later be the basis for the DT466E. (different heads and fuel pumps obviously on the E's)..

the flex plate I posted above is an 8 bolt... they are harder to find than the 12 bolt..

while the original AT545 flexplate may be dual bolt pattern for the Converter bolts, dont try to re-use it.. it is an offset flexplate vs a flat flexplate(correct for 643 is flat)...

I know of at least a couple .. a 94 and a 95 that have the NGD designations.. I think the actual part numbers of those end in PLN which was for mechanicals.. as they did in fact build both mechanical and E through the 97 model year..

This info comes from some mechanics and trans directors in large districts that ran almost exclusively DT engines through the good years..

Ah, I've only ever seen NGD's in 98's as NGD466's.

I also have a 1997 International 30 foot bus that has a wheelchair lift. It is a p pump motor. The tiny bigbus is also a mechanically ejected. There are electronics on that bus though. There is a small black box near the driver's seat that says Panasonic AM FM cassette and some lights.

Then 1997 is in hiding right now.

I am going to do the really short bus now

Time to start scrounging. I have checked under all the cushions. Saving for a trans now.

This bus is straight-up mechanical. The only Electronics is the Panasonic AM FM radio. I have to turn the key to the off position and then pull a cable that's connected to the injection pump to cut off the fuel supply. I do not believe this is a new generation diesel.

The link is dead. Could you provide the part number and I can see if I can source it elsewhere.

Good deal, hey just saw the last post. I’ve besn traveling in the Bay Area all week so haven’t kept up on the forum .. NGD engines were mechanical 408/466 .. they aren’t computerized but they used the newer valve covers and the 12 bolt flywheel , so the flexplate is the same as the newer E series engines. They also went to a serpentine style belt in mid or late 94 from what I’m told.

You are in the SF Bay Area, send me a message and I will buy you a beer or a cup of coffee. Might even buy you breakfast at Fred's in Sausalito.
