Post 3126 Cat with a Starting Problem

I own a 2001 Blue Bird All American (A3RE) with a 3126 Cat . THe starter burnt out on me and I had it rebuilt. My neighbor next door removed and installed it. Now when you put the Battery cables on the batteries (I just brought 2 new batteries).
The engine begins the spin (if the key is on, the bus will start). I am lost on the wiring issues or where to look next.

Any reasonable answers? I am up against the clock right now!

sounds like someone connected one of the battery + wires to the small so9lenoid engagement terminal on the starter so it spins as soon as you hook up the batteries, or one of the wires from the large battery + terminal is bad and has shorted against the solenoid engagement terminal.

I think cadillackid nailed it on the small pos wires connected wrongly.
With batteries disconnected go to the starter. See how many smaller guage wires you have there. The starter solenoid should be marked with "S" and "R" terminals. It may be these are reversed and a simple changeover may get you back in order.
Can you get pics of this as is now, might help explain better if we can see what the neighbor did.

I have also seen when tightening the positive battery cable it will rotate and make contact on the s terminal.

Maybe the starter relay is shot and is stuck in the "on" position. Or maybe the ignition switch is bad and the "start" position is shorting to the "on" position. That would keep the starter engaged when you were driving, and "burn it out". Check your wiring, and check to see that the wire for the starter solenoid is NOT hot, unless the key is in the start position.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions and you guys were correct.
I have under the weather so I am just getting back to you.
Burnt-out a 2nd starter (the one I had rebuilt) so I had to buy another one.
So now I have to find out why the key and the switch in the engine compartment don't work. I starting with purchasing a new ignition switch.
