CAT 3126E engine temperature range
So I took the bus on it’s first trip today (to get my 6th gear unlocked!)
According to the gauge (unknown accuracy) the engine ran around 195-205 during normal driving conditions.
I hit a bit of traffic and was moving slowly around 5 mph at one point in time.
The gauge slowly crept up to 220 and then the fan would go full speed (roared like crazy) and the engine temp would quickly (10-30 seconds?) climb down to around the 195-205 range before the fan clutch would go back to normal operation
No codes, no warnings, everything else seemed to be fine (no power loss or anything).
Is this considered normal operation?

My first suspicion based on other threads is that my gauge is reading 10-15 degrees hotter than actual

Those temps look perfectly normal.

Those temps are fine. Newer engines are designed to run hotter for decreased emissions. So everything is working normally at those temps.

I know Navistar has the fan on preset at 214 for the electronic-clutched models.. CAT may run theirs a bit hotter.. 235 on navistars is the alarm-bells-ring temp.. so to me it sounds pretty normal for newer diesels..

That’s about what I observe as well. Ironically, climbing mountains I sit at 180, then it rises to mid 220s on the downhill. Oil pressure drops a little on the uphill side (for a given RPM) and then goes back up on the downhill side.
I did see an overall temp drop after going to synthetic transmission fluid.

And at least on mine the fan is either on or off, not in between. It will sound louder or quieter based on how much other noise there is and whether or not the environment will reflect the sound.

all depends on the type of clutch.. an electric or electrically-activated hydraulic fan clutch is always just on or off..
a viscous fan clutch (common on conventionals and some flat nose FE's. ) is a more gradual on / off.

Mines a FE flat nose
The Dan is most definitely on all the time
But at 220 (according to the gauge) it blows crazy strong

Mine's in a short bus. 1999 Freightliner/Thomas with Cat 3126 and a 545 trans.
I ran it 60-70 mph the whole way home from north GA and it stayed at what looked like 220.

EC yours should have a standard viscous clutch... if you dont like 220 you may be able to adjust that temp down on the fan clutch...
I have my bus set to go fan on at 205 and off at 195.. i know the manufcaturers like to run em hotter..

if you have an electric fan clutch. then its adjusted via the computer settings most likely.. if its a viscous, i made a video on how to adjust those.
