Fuel tank size

We have a 2004 Thomas 40’ front engine flat nose with CAT 3126 and MD3060 transmission

I believe the gas tank is 100 gallons? But we’ve never filled it up.

We’re leaving on a 2100 mile trip and will be filling it up for the first time and curious if that sounds right that we probably have a 100 gallon tank?

If so how much actual fuel is feasible to squeeze into it? 90? 85?

Thanks in advance

Mine is an RE CAT 3126 3060 13 window. It has 100 gallon tank. If it were empty I’m guessing you could fit a full 100 in, but I usually fill when it will take about 60 gallons - in my case somewhere around 500 miles from last fill up.

If the tank is accessible from underneath, you could measure it’s height, width and depth and do some math?

No matter how many gallons you find it takes, don't fill it right up. The fuel foams and needs expansion space so if you have 100 gallons maybe 85-90.
And don't let it get so low that the fuel can't get picked up and pumped.
Bleeding is no fun as many have had to do.

Your Cat will get awful indigestion if you try and fill it with gas. . . .

Like BlackJohn said, watch out for foaming when filling diesel. The fuel foams in the filler pipe (like a root beer float), and sometimes it will fill the pipe. (Ford pickups from 2000-2006ish often have this problem.) Sometimes the fuel pump nozzle detects the foam, thinks the tank is full, and shuts off. So don't over-fill the tank, but if you know it was down to a quarter, and it only takes 6 or 10 gallons, you've probably got a foam problem. Wait a few minutes, and slow down your fill speed on the pump a bit.

My Genesis has a 60 gallon tank and the fill spout is mounted at such an angle to prevent "filling" the tank. When it starts coming out the spout there is still 3-4" of airspace in the tank. If I send the flip bus to salvage I have to siphon more than 3/4 of a tank.

Perhaps you could email or call Thomas and get a copy of the build sheet for your bus?

That would tell you a lot about your bus including the fuel tank info.
