That's just the old farm boy way of getting the bubbles out of the system, and it still works. We don't have any near 90 degree hills to get the air out of the heaters though. Yes, I know the rear heaters have bleeder valves. I'm thinking air is why my rear heater didn't put out any heat.

Had to take out the rear heater to remove the wall panels anyway. Right about now that rear heater is looking better and better.

Are you sure your current trans isn't pto capable? Remove the cover and see if the gear is there.

That one you have linked from craigslist was used behind an 8.1 gas engine so the governor/modulator won't be ideal/usable behind a cummins.

That's an mt643 there. It already has a pto attached so you wouldn't have to source one of those.

However, if you currently have an at545, You'll have to do some modifications in order to get the mt643 to swap in. It's definitely capable with off the shelf parts though so it shouldn't take anything in the way of custom stuff. The mt643 is definitely a better transmission then the at545 so you can look at it as sort of an upgrade. There are threads on here where people went into detail on the swap.

The model of 545 that is PTO capable is the 545N were commonly used in things like septic tank trucks and medium sized boom trucks.

I've seen regular at545's that have the pto provision. The hole is in every at545 but the gear to drive it is optional. You have to remove the cover on the side to check to see if the gear is there.

I don't remember what the N stood for in at545N but I don't think it designated pto.

From reading various posts, the best I've come up with is that the AT545N has a neutral position on the shifter so that the parking gear can be integrated into the gear selector without actually having a parking pawl inside the transmission.

I have seen quite a few lately.
All came out of vehicles that had PTO attachments.
All had the PTO cover removed.
And all said 545n.
Not saying it designates a PTO but maybe a different/added set up in the tranny to sustain the extra hours?
Don't Know. But I do Now that every 545 in a truck that I have seen that had a PTO had a 545N in it or had just come out of it.
The 643's and 3060's I have seen have the cover plate in the exact same area labeled PTO but I have t noticed it on the 1000-2000 series yet.
I will be back at the Allison shop tomorrow and take plenty of pics.
What really sucks is I still only now how to post one at a time.
So get ready for multiples or I might say the hell with that and send specific's as asked.

Your time and money will dictate what you actually do.
All we can do is offer advice.
I question what you are doing without outriggers?
For me anything done is SAFETY FIRST regardless of how its powered or set up.
As far as your power from the tranny to the PTO setup you need to size that yourself and not rely on us.
what you are you are doing is a little different than what we bought our buses for to build on limited budgets.
And for what you want to do we are not your engineers!
We can give advice on tranny options but it is just that.
Having your own little crane wors on a farm and might worK on some residential construction sites?
and I can only hope that that is all you want to try to use it on.

You have a long row to hoe to Make a custom build OSHA compliant?
They are going to want a builders name building exactly what you have for at least 10-years. With records of the build use and records of every bolt, nut, washer grade and the mark or the name the exact man that assembled it or QC'd the men assembling it.
Been there done that.
Ain't a problem until the OSHA man drives buy and starts asking questions and all that paperwork isn't in the crane/boom truck or whatever.
All it takes is a city inspector, some butt head that Knows better driving buy, a pissed off employee that Knows better to call the 800 number to OSHA for complaints that is posted on every job board that is required whether resi,or commercial.
Long story short.
You build one and field test it on residential and show improvement of the original design and show that trend for 10-years you might get a patent then OSHA might start looking to consider your build as safe.
I have a load of meaning OSHA stories? Some from me and some from the men that taught me including a local man that ended up with a rebar through his body that created rebar caps. Me caught on the job myself years ago and could barely breathe from cutting concrete without water in a small room with no ventilation.
Years ago and just the beginnings of my OSHA stories.
If they walk on a job with a boom in the air that crane is supposed to look showroom quality regardless of its age.
Just my experience.
Good luck

Idk man. If you're going to have someone else do the custom work, why don't you have them do all the specing and everything. I'm not a fan of allisons and their pto's in critical situations because they're converter driven vs engine driven. They work for dumptrucks and other things that aren't constant duty but running at or near max capacity continuously and I question their reliability.
