5.9 L Cummins diesel transmission overheat

All of a sudden if I drive my 2004 bluebird bus, the transmission temp Guage shoots up past the 400 mark. As soon as I noticed it, I have had it parked and trying to find help with it, but not getting response from anyone that can work on it! Please help!

Thank you

Where were you driving (up a mountain, on the highway, in the city)?, how long was it operating correctly before this issue?, What transmission do you have? What does the engine temp look like? Is this just after startup?

Pull the transmission dipstick and see if it is really that hot. I would imagine it would be smoking at those temps. Perhaps it is a gauge issue.

I don't think it would run long at 400, check the gauge and sending unit. Hit it with a temp gun to get the correct numbers.

Read page 26 of this Allison operators manual, it will provide insight on your situation.

https://www.wanderlodgeownersgroup.c...t=OM2157EN.pdf

Check the color of the tranny fluid. If it is a dark red almost black, fluid got roasted!

If still a clear red ( not dark/burnt) try going for a short test drive to see how it responds.

You can also pull codes on the tranny, that might provide more useful info.

Never mind….

I don’t know why I thought you have an MD3060 tranny ????

What tranny do you have ????

in 2004 it should be a 3060 or a 2000 series..

do you have any check-engine or check trans lights?

a modern allison transmission if it loses J1939 connectivity to the engine will fail to lock the torque converter as it uses converter "spin" as a means for determining throttle input.. this will overheat the trans in short order...

if its truly hit 400 degrees then id expect the dip stick to be blueish on the end and the fluid to smell burnt...

It's just on a city road. I ran the engine for maybe 20 minutes, and was only driving for about 5 minutes when it happened
