Bus Specs Oinions

I have a bus that I am wondering if anyone else has the same set up or has an opinion on how it would do if used on the highway or for long haul..The specs are
1998 Bluebird with the 6BT Cummins 5.9 Turbo
Transmission is the AT-545 autio
Gear ratio is 4.78
Tires are 295/75R22.5 on the back and 11R 22.5 on the front but it needs new tires so I could replace with either size..

What are your thoughts on this for a highway use conversion, top cruising speed, power, etc??

If you already have it try it out on the highway. There are online gear ratio calculators. I used one from Summit Racing. Just putting your numbers in gives 63 Mph at 2500 rpms. That does not compensate for torque converter slip. So about 60 mph cruising speed as it is. Bit slow for interstates.

What size is your bus?

The 5.9 can be turned up for more power, but the trans will become the weak point, with heat from torque converter slippage.

The MT 643 has a lock up torque converter, if you want to do a lot of highway miles changing to that trans, and a little lower rear end ratio, plus upping the power will give you a nice highway cruiser.

It is a 35 footer..I actually prefer to cruise around 55 so it might be OK but would mainly be used for shorter trips..

Yes shorter trips at 55 it should do well. Leave it as it is and enjoy.

Do watch trans temps and engine temps though, as long as you keep them in line you should be fine.
