Glass fuel-water separator

Recently picked up a 1992 BB with a Cummins 6BT. The trip home took several days due to the bus liking the grass right-of-way more than the asphalt. Finally ran a fuel line directly from the fuel tank to the lift pump, bypassing this box-style glass fuel-water separator since it seemed to be sucking more air than fuel.

I haven’t seen this type of separator and was wondering if I needed to replace it with something less likely suck air or have cracked glass. If so, got any suggestions?
