ISL engine

I have seen a couple of school busses with an isl motor. Do thes have Jake brakes and what is the typical power rating for these motors? This may be an interesting conversion into my bus in the future. Also is the emmision stuff easily removable from the newer isl or is preemmisions motors easyto find in busses?

Looks like detuned they might be around 350 and can be flashed up to 450.


It's a big motor. I have seen them in transit buses and RV's.



ISL had no emissions until 2007. Would recommend to stay before that. If you go to a newer model, you'll spend thousands to have it all deleted and most shops won't help you if you need it..

What school buses do you see these in? I have only seen them in the coach buses, and transits. Are you swapping something into a rear engine or conventional?

ISL took the place of the ISC when cummins engines were consolidated. Never saw a diesel ISL in a school bus. It's a possibility that they used them on the RE type D transit buses like an ISC could have been had.

Much more common that I've seen are ISL-G, which run off natural gas. It's cool if you're into that type of thing, but I don't think I'd buy one. Too many hassles with tank certs and refilling to be worth it for an individual IMO.

ISL could have a jacobs engine brake installed. Never seen one with one in a school bus. Power levels can be found on the internet doing a google search. With the epa cracking down on guys installing deletes, I wouldn't say that any engine emissions component is easily removable any more.

I did a gates vin decoder its says isb In the bus. Most likely a typo from auction site as they stated isl. Was hoping this was the case and if so hoping there were pre emissions ones also especially for a thomas skoolie. As I would do the swap Into my bus in the future.. 400hp 1200ft/lbs and a Jake, what not to like about that
