Mileage Discrepancy

On my 2000 BB AARE, the odo reads 245K & 8.8k hours. But when I connect to the ecu, it reads 156K & 5.6k hours.

I have the service records and there is no record of an ecu replacement, or engine replacement (engine serial matches build sheet).

There is a entry for dash / gauge repair. (Multi function dash) However, the mileage throughout the years seems consistent.

Any thoughts?

Sounds to me like the dash was replaced with a used one showing more miles/hours than the previous one.

It'd be nice

I would love it if that's the case, but this school had the bus since new, and every work order has mileage which grows consistently from the beginning until I bought it.

Just seems odd... like I'm missing something.

Maybe the ECM was replaced with a used one from a low mileage vehicle.

Serial number

I found the serial number for the ecu that's in there now, so I need to find a build sheet which list the ecu and see if it matches. The blue bird portal doesn't have it.

I usually don't get that lucky, but I'm kinda hoping the zero offset in the program caused the mileage and hours to read higher than they are. I know I'm probably just dream'n.

the ECM usually has the VIN and Engine serial number.. if those match then the ECM wouldve been reprogrammed with the last data on hand from the dealer.. which very well means that the miles / hours show lower.. this is assumming the original ECM died beyond being able to be accessed by the insite

Odo

So the odo would maintain the original mileage.

The vin, engine and trans serial all match the build sheet.

The service records are amazing compared to what I've seen from other bus shops. Every work order for every month since they owned the bus, which is from new. They also include every work order which the drivers submitted for repairs and the wo's for items the mechanics found during inspections. Invoices for tires and windshield replacements and a few other things which were done outside the bus shop. All the wo's have part numbers for anything they replaced, filters, light bulbs, fuel pump... etc.

The most logical is somehow the ecm wo was misplaced... but don't kill my dream just yet... Let me enjoy it for a little while.

What is the grand total for all the work done on the bus during its lifetime?

If the maintainance records are detailed and they don't show any ECM work but they do show dash gauge work I would bet that the ECM is correct and the dash was replaced with a used part from another bus. To confirm this I would check the ECM for engine serial # as cadillackid suggested. 245k does sound more likely for a bus of that year.

Insite

I used Insite to verify the vin, ECM and engine serial number, stored in the ECM. The only thing I can't verify is if the ECM serial number is original, or under a calibration line in Insite if the ECM code is original, meaning the ECM may have been re-flashed which may have reset the mileage.

As far as mileage for year, it was an activity bus. According to the bus shop manager, it was mainly used for taking kids to games and events, with occasional use for routes if a regular route bus was out of service.

It's not that big of a deal really, I was just kinda curious if anyone had ever ran into a similar situation.

Internationals have crappy dash gages- it’s one big circuit board ans they crack. So is trust the RCM if it’s original. My dash is way off but the RCM is spot on.
Cheers
