It is an RV. Rules are different. If it was a school bus it has to be outside the body of the bus so it doesn't collect exhaust underneath. But it will be out the side. Same difference, different regulations.

It seems that many states don't say anything about it specifically (like my state, PA), but some (like California, Connecticut, Georgia and Massachusetts) basically require it to go out the back (or else up over the top). Vermont, the state my bus is registered in, requires it to be out the back or else out the side behind any openable windows (which in my case means it has to go out the back since I'm keeping all the original bus windows).

if you lower it out the side think about the family in the car next to you having to breath your **** while sitting at a long stoplite or traffic jam. also watch your hot [and it gets real hot] exhaust on the dry grass while you pull into your campsite.
