What's the difference?

between a 6CTA and an ISC engine? People were talking on this forum about a nice looking white bus (maybe former prison transport? Funny small windows at the top of the wall) and it has a 6CTA in it.

I look it up and it's a Cummins 8.3 liter wet sleeve engine with electronic control. Soooo? Marketing nomenclature or something evolutionary I missed?

I'd say that's an excellent question for Mark O.

Old vs New style labeling.

6- 6 cylinders
C- C series engine(B,C,L,M,X are common ones)
T- Turbocharged
A- Aftercooled

Another Popular one is 6BT
6- 6 cylinders
B- B series engine
T- Turbocharged

The B series also came in a 4 cylinder version was subsequently called 4BT.

ISC is the new style labeling. It's essentially the same series engine with a few improvements and added computer control. IS stands for Interact System, while the last letter indicates the series.

You can also add the displacement after the the name if there is more then one in the same series, such as the case of ISB3.9, ISB5.9, and ISB 6.7.
