On another note- upgraded the Tomos from a 14mm to 16mm SHA Dellorto. Much more power but I'm ruch down low and still not four stroking on the top, so much more tuning to do.

Sold my black 2005 Tomos and my 2000 Derbi Atlantis this weekend!
Always good to make a few bucks at a hobby, eh?
Picking up another Tomos this weekend for a hundred bucks.
These mopeds are FUN!!! And this is definitely the time of year to buy.

Hey Charlie, found these pics I took a couple years ago when I was in Holland.
Don't know what kind of scooter it is.
Almost the same colour as my bus...

CB,
I've wanted a scooter for years....
What's desirable out there? What's out there to run away and hide from?
I know I don't know the nomenclature, but at what point does a moped become a scooter? 49cc and lower is a moped? 50cc and above is a scooter? Where's the break?
So many used units to choose from on craigslist and I can't make an uneducated guess as to what's better than the other. Especially an hour north at university of Arkansas campus. Plus more mechanics in that college town.

down in florida they have scooters that look similar to above that are 49cc.. in Most states. 49cc its a non-motorcycle-license-required. and 50cc or above and it requires a motorcycle license.

A moped typically looks like this-
Mopeds usually have restricted power output and less than 50cc. What qualifies as a moped can vary slightly from state to state. Some states don't even require registration. In FL I pay $20 a year for the registration and that's it. No helmet or insurance required. Its basically considered a bicycle with a low powered engine. Moped top speeds are restricted to 35 or less in most areas. Some as low as 25mph. Most owners simply rejet and add a pipe with an expansion chamber and pick up a good bit of power and several mph. While not legal, I've never heard of anyone being busted or hassled for this.
Scooters typically look like this-
Scooters have smaller diameter wheels (usually but not always) and have a general step through design with the engine and swingarm usually combined into one unit. Scooters are considered motorcycles in most areas if they have 50cc or more and/or have higher power output/top speeds. MOST scooters top out around 45-55 unless you get into the larger ones. There are MANY sizes of scooters and some can even cruise at freeway speeds and hit triple digits. The lines between scooter and motorcycle can become a bit blurred once you get bigger than around 150cc, imo.
If you're looking for a frugal, fun, simple means of around-town type transportation a scooter or moped can be awesome.
I like the classic mopeds. Tomos is my favorite due to their being powerful and more or the less the most modern of the classic European mopeds. Puch are great mopeds, as well. Traditional mopeds aren't for everyone. You have to like to tinker with things and must LOVE the smell of a two stroke to truly appreciate moped life. Check out moped army for more on mopeds- Moped Army - Swarm and Destroy
If you want something simple and reliable and don't want to tinker with it get a nice Japanese, European, or even a Taiwanese scooter. But DON'T buy ANYTHING Chinese. You WILL regret it. They're crap.
I like Vespas and Yamahas. Hondas are good, too. Two stroke Hondas are amazing.

Good info!
I found a Wikipedia article that shows country of origin for each company's scooters... I'll keep that list close by!

The green scooter in the picture is a Vespa made by Piaggio, the definition of a moped varies by state, in ohio a moped has to have pedals, in fact Ohio has a list of mopeds, if it is not on the list, it is a motorcycle and must be registered as such and they are getting picky about electric bicycles now

Time for some maintenance.
The rear tire is 7 y/o the front is 14! Need front brakes so I jacked her up and painted the wheels too.
Just did a belt at 11,888 and new rollers too.

Very cool scoot, Don.
Did you go with oem belt/rollers?
For two up riding, I've found a slightly lighter set of rollers can give a nice lil boost in acceleration. I've never had a fast scooter like yours though!
What tires are you going with?

OEM belt and Mr. Pulley stock wt rollers. Really made a difference in scootability! Pulls a lot harder for 20hp!
I've had such good luck with Shinko tires, I went with them.

How did I just find this thread! I've got a Manco Thunderbird that has gone through several iterations.
My mini bike is set up with a centrificul clutch and the predator 212cc engine. Current gearing is about 28 mph @ 3600 rpm or so with enough torque to do wheelies.
I pulled the stock flywheel and did a billet aluminum one which, should let me run around 7k rpm. However, I can't seem to set proper valve clearance [emoji35]

All mine are road legal.
That thing looks ok to pose for pics. Doesn't look very comfy.
I sometimes miss my ZRX1200 but it wanted to go 120+ everywhere.

The mini bike is of questionable road legality. Eventually it might get sold/traded for a road legal scoot that can be stored in the bus or on a trailer hitch.

YEah that's not a street legal thing. Could be fun at campgrounds and stuff, though.
Every bus should have a scoot or ped in the back!
