In March of 2022 we took Sully to Hudson Bus Sales in Cleburne, TX to turn him into a magic bus as per my youngest son Lawson's wish through Make-A-Wish. The biggest changes to the exterior was the paint, going from an all white bus, to the maroon colored rear-end we have now. There is also vinyl lettering in different areas with Sully's name, and a giant image of Sully on the rear door.
Interior
Make-A-Wish transformed Sully in many ways. MAW re-covered the seats in a bright red pleather (Lawson's favorite color), installed a new radio, installed an RV style roof mounted A/C, installed 2 Maxxair fans to assist in pulling out hot air, installed a generator and a 5000W inverter to give us electricity, overlaid a rubber floor, installed a custom kennel for the boys' service dogs, created a bench/couch, and some other improvements.
Customizations
Our family is very unique and Make-A-Wish and Hudson Bus wanted to surprise us with many of the modifications. Unfortunately, some of these modifications had unintended consequences, so I've had to change some of what had been installed.
One of these was replacing a kennel made for the boys' 2 service dogs, which are labrador retrievers. Worried about space, they created a very narrow kennel that was uncomfortable for the dogs on a long trip. I was able to mottle together 3 smaller kennels and create a one of a kind large kennel for the dogs. They now have plenty of room!
Due to the boys' mitochondrial condition and low muscle tone, they need all the support they can get. I installed racing harnesses and asked a local upholstery shop if they would sew straps on the top of the seats to keep the harness straps from falling off the sides. Now we feel the boys are much safer as we travel.
The boys often choke when eating due to their low muscle tone. The bench/couch was a nice idea, but it didn't work for our family's needs. I reached out to RecPro and they were kind enough to assist us in getting a dinette and table that works perfect for us. Now we can all eat together on longer trips and if the boys need to rest after a stressful specialist appointment, we can make it into a bed until they feel well enough to travel.
