12V converter...

It is time to think about getting a DC converter/charger for my bus. I had originally thought about using a three stage battery charger and just hardwire it in, but after acquiring a 40amp smart charger I found that when you plug it in, it does nothing until you manually turn it on. Then I found that even if you set it to charge at maximum amperage, it will decrease to an appropriate level for the battery, which is good for the battery, but even if you turn on all the 12V lights inside, it will not go back up to a higher charge rate. So...the charger is not a great option for my bus. I want to be able to plug in and not worry about remembering to press any buttons or turning everything on that I want to use before setting the charger. I have found that the Progressive Dynamics converter/chargers with the Charge Wizard circuitry seem to be the best fit for my needs. The only question I have now is how big do I need? They come in 30, 45, 50, 60 , 70 and I think 80 amp models. Or something like that. I was originally thinking to get a 40 amp charger, but now I am thinking the 60 amp would be the best way to go. I plan on running a pair of 12V RV/Marine batteries (fake deep cycles) because I have them already, but when they give up the ghost, which I assume wont take very long, I will likely go with 4-6 6v trojans. I want to be able to fast charge them with a generator without having to run it for 12 hours a day. 60 amp good enough?

Re: 12V converter...

Dang, that is one nice inverter/converter/charger/auto transfer switch all in one package. I may have to check into that, but I imagine it cost more than my entire bus so far!
