electric switch question

hey!

i want to wire a little circuit off an inverter.

one circuit is going to run the cooking, but the 2 appliances can't be on at the same time.

is there a center tap switch i can put in to do the either or switch for this?

the 2 appliances are a hot plate and a microwave. i want them plugged in in their cabinets. and a wall switch to select which one works.

does that make sense?

thanks

You could use a rotary switch like this one

Note it's raison d'etra is for switching two inputs between one output (like choosing between shore or generator power to pass through to your inverter), but it works just the same in reverse. May not be the most economical solution, but it works, and I can attest to the switch being high quality and rated for your use case.

that switch was probably my first thought too.

but,

the way i see it, i don't think i need to switch neutrals. idk.

i just want to transfer the hot wire from one to the other.

rotary is fine, but only single pole? idk.

i'm sure i've seen a similar wired switch in a standard switch plate, but i can't conceive how it would be wired.

hmmm
maybe a dpdt with the hots jumped together and the leads on opposite ends?

A decent, standard, 3-way light switch would work. Go with a spec grade 20 amp. Stay away from the cheap ones.
It's a single pole double throw SPDT

Thanks Rwneilson. That makes much more sense, and is far more economical.

followup safety question.....

ok, so the 2 travelers terminals are brass and the black terminal is load.

in my situation.....
spdt 3 way switch
3 screws - 1 black for load, 2 brass for travelers

the input from the inverter is the black load.

each brass traveler goes to the appliance.

i guess my first though would be to put a hot on one of the brass... so, im asking. it feels backwards.

It only feels backwards. It's a double throw switch first. It became a "3-way" when used for lighting. What you're doing is just a different application. It should work just fine.
