Steve, I think you nailed it. So with a sub panel do I just use a separate ground bar?

I posted the picture to my album - I couldn’t get it to post in the thread. I only have 2 albums with a couple pics in each, you should find it right away.

Yes.

Typically the ground bar is connected to the metal panel box and the neutral bar is mounted in a manner that it is isolated from ground.

Yes, what Steve said. Determine if the bars are insulated from or connected to the box or if the bar you connected your grounds to is connected to the terminal you connected your neutrals to. If the existing terminals are insulated from the box add an additional grounding bar to the box. You may be able to move the bar your grounds are connected to and screw it to the box.

Also, the wires entering your box need to be properly terminated with a knock out clamp so the metal edge doesn't rub through the insulation in your wire.

Another detail,

Your ground should be bonded to the bus chassis as well.

I didn't see where anyone answered your question on using an electric heater with an extension cord. Yes, you are correct that those cheap cords you get a dime a dozen will not handle the load but if you run a larger rated line you should have no problem. I ran one on a 10Awg line with no problem but an identical one with 12Awg heated up (just a little) if I tried to run it on anything but a low setting. bTW: both were 25ft lines that I had connected to the house.

Makes sense on the heater. Thanks Breeze.

Appreciate all the intel, folks. I have a feeling this will get everything up and running properly. If not I’ll let you know.
