Headlights stay on

Hey group. I bought a 99 Thomas with the 5.9 Cummins a week ago. When I bought it the guy said the battery was dead. Charged it and it started just fine. Drove home, parked and restarted a couple of times. After that nothing. Charged it again, fired up just fine. Today I replaced the single battery with duals (they match) from another project. Started up great. Let it run for an hour to top them off. Started flipping switches to test all my lights. Finally an hour later my headlights were still on and I cannot get them to **** off. Any ideas? Something easy I am overlooking? Thank you ahead of time.

Are the lights a dim yellow or brighter? A dim yellow indicates the DRL (daytime running light) circuit is staying on. If they are brighter, it is likely the headlight relay is stuck.

Also, if you have not discovered, your clearance lights are on a console mounted switch to your left. The headlights will likely be on a separate dashboard switch, if not separate switches on the console.

I’ve had some issues with the ignition key switch turning off and allowing the key to come out but it not being electrically off.

My bus won’t allow the headlights to be on with the key in the off position if I recall correctly. (if not headlights then certainly other accessories) so try jiggling the key and seeing if that helps.

Could be a bad light switch, a stuck relay or a short circuit if not. You can likely pull the relay to turn them off in a pinch.

see if it has a daytime running light module.
I had a thomas with one that went bad and it did the same thing.

I have a 1999 International 7.3 that had daytime running lights. I didn't want to be parked somewhere with my bus running with the DRL's on. It wasn't a priority at the time, because I was working on other stuff on the bus, until I changed the stock headlights with LED ones. the new LED lights were flickering with the DRL feature.

After a few hours of researching fuse panels and wiring diagrams I ended up finding a 10A fuse on the side of the fuse panel in the bus. Had yellow wires attached to it. Fuse wasn't marked but I pulled it and my DRL went off. Didn't seem to affect anything else that I noticed.

The new LED headlights work 10X better than the stock ones.

Which LEDs did you go with?

I would agree with the posters on a bad relay but another gremlin that will make things act screwy is a poor or missing ground. Also, corrosion on relays or burnt out relays that failed or melted on, Give wires related to the circuit the tug test and see if the wire falls out of lug.
Or, just start pulling wires out till they go off...

I bought them on eBay. Plugged right in. They were cheap, so time will tell how long they will last.
