I want to mount supports to carry a bicycle on the front of the bus. Unfortunately this will block the headlights and I’m wondering if it’s legal in Colorado or any state to install alternative headlights about 12 inches above where the original lights are.
I would probably leave the originals in place and buy some square or round Offroad style lights & install them
Any advice on this including legal issues would be appreciated
They allow relocated headlights on trucks with snow plows here in NH.
Don't know about CO or any other state but if they have state safety inspections where you are, pop into one of the stations and pose the question?
I know in ohio it specifically spells out snow plows as a reason for relocated lights on trucks.. a big part of doing it withoiut issue would be making sure the beam pattern is adjusted so it doesnt shine in anyone;s eyes.. having driven a snow plow pickup truck i can safely say that thew angle you must put the lights at makes them pretty much suck in the dark...
Not directly relevant, but man do I wish indicator lights on the edges of snow plows were mandatory. I hate suddenly realizing the headlights coming at me at night are attached to a dark plow that is a foot or two closer to me than the side of the truck.
I haven't searched Colorado or other states, but in Arizona the statute has limitations that you could probably find in other states. Here's the Arizona section for an example:
C. A head lamp on a motor vehicle, including a motorcycle, an all-terrain vehicle and a motor driven cycle, shall be located at a height of not more than fifty-four inches nor less than twenty-two inches to be measured as provided in section 28-923, subsection B.
Here’s my office on a typical night, and while I do agree it would be nice to have marker lights on the plow there’s just no way they could survive the abuse. Also as you can see if the snow is real sticky it’s impossible to keep things clear except a small wiper pattern. Trust me at 40-50 mph it’s not a lot of fun for us either so the big yellow flashy stuff up top is the best we can do.
Cheers
Some urban intercity buses have a fold-down bike rack on the front for cyclists to mount their ride before boarding the bus. Maybe take a look at how that works for them and if that might be adaptable for your needs. Perhaps the buses just have their headlights set far enough outward that the bikes don't block the beam.
