Meter no reading Inverter draw

I got one of those cheap LCD meters from Amazon with a 100 amp shunt to the main ground. It reads watts and amp draw on all my 12v stuff but not from the 115v inverter. The inverter ground goes direct to the batteries and I assume this is why. Is it ok to move the ground right to the chassis where the shunt goes and will it read then? Is it safe?
