Tail lights and associated issues. Please help!!!

I have a 2004 Bluebird / International school bus. Up until today, it was running fine. Today it won't crank.

I built a platform behind the bus for two big storage boxes. Then, I removed the lights on the back of the bus (brake, turn signal, backup light, and the little round red light -- so four lights on each side, eight total). I Extended the wires using 12 gauge copper stranded wire and butt splices -- that way, I could mount the lights on the back of the new storage boxes I made.

Today, I reconnected the lights. Now the bus won't start. It sounds like it's going to start, the engine is trying to start, but it never actually starts.

When I turn on the lights (with the engine off), the headlights come on, but all the other lights are off.

Are these items possibly related? Or is it just coincidence. And what else would you try? (Please help!!!)

Batteries show 12.05 on the multimeter
The gas tank is just less than 1/2 full

The bus started three days ago. (That was before the rear lights were hooked up.)

Your battery voltage is a bit low to start your bus. Put a charger on it after you check the electrolyte levels. Might take all day or overnight to bring them back but they should be able to start it then. Voltage in the low 12's is effectively dead for starting purposes. Better when in mid 13's for voltage.

did you run a ground wire from bus body out to the tool boxes with the relocated lights
most 12v that i know uses the light frame or the mounting screw as the ground.

The back door on most school busses have lock out switches, to prevent the bus from starting if the back door is locked. Some buses will interrupt the starter circuit some interrupt the engine circuit. So make sure your bus body builder didn’t put that type of switch in. If you don’t have a interruption switch then your problem isn’t related, look for fuel leaks that drain the fuel after it sits. This will require you to prime the engine before it will start. If your bus has a electric type fuel pump it will prime itself by hitting the starter momentarily then let the pump run till it stops then repeat this a few times and you’ll be ready to start.
