Composting Toilets are HIDEOUS!

We have been back and forth for a while now about whether or not to use a composting toilet. Since we have a rain catchment system we won't need to go into town for water. The problem is do we want to go into town to dump.

Recently we got serious about compost toilets so that we can be totally self sustained which is the ultimate goal. After spending hours looking over composting toilets, we're not sure sure it's right for us asthetically. We are putting a lot of work into making our bus look nice and a giant plastic bucket doesn't seem to fit in.

Has anyone come across a nice looking composting toilet?

The Ecoflo ones are ok. It's unfortunate that the Natures Head ones are speckled with another color because we could settle for one of those. We also found another one that looks great but it's almost $6,000 lol!

We had the same dilemma, but we ended up going with the Nature's Head. Seems the most affordable choices are build your own, or buy the Nature's Head.....still pricey, but the most affordable composting toilet that we found. It really doesn't look too bad if the rest of the bathroom looks nice. It's relatively bland, aesthetically.

I will say this about the Nature's Head.....if properly vented, it doesn't stink at all and it's dead simple to empty and maintain. It's not the most comfortable, though. I kinda wish it used a regular toilet seat, and if I'd realized that I'd probably have tried some sort of DIY option first.

You can build your own for about $50 but it's gonna look like you built it for $50. I'm frugal enough to consider that a positive. The important parts to me are that it works, it doesn't make a mess, and it doesn't stink.

I previously had an AirHead on our boat and I have nothing against the commercial products other than comparative value for money.

Take a look around on https://permies.com/forums

There are some folks over there who have built some beautiful examples.

Considering this is a thread about aesthetically looking toilets, a wooden box with a lid isn’t what we’re after.

Not what we’re looking for at all.

I'm building a basic bench with a Corian top with holes cut in it for the seat.

Which is fine for a cabin style interior. We are looking for nice looking manufactured toilets.

I think you've seen the best of the common commercially available options already. If the sparkle paint on the nature's head is what you don't like about it, that's a pretty easily solved issue with a can of enamel paint and a couple of hours.

I don’t have good luck painting thing like that haha. Especially a $700 toilet.

I love the Nature's Head toilet - I use it daily - and never any issues. For me, it was worth the $960. It's not for everyone or every situation - but for 1 or 2 people, it has been great.

Everyone seems to be confused about what this thread is about.

Your expectations may be unrealistic with whats available out there. You've mentioned the top brands and none of them meet your expectations.

Composting Toilets are HIDEOUS!

We’ve thought that about many things with this conversion. There’s no good roof hatches. Found yacht hatches. There’s no good battery solution. Found lithium batteries. There’s no affordable solar fridges. Found a GREAT new $200 12v fridge.

I’m hoping someone has gone past page 1 of Google and has found a great composting toilet solution. The market is there.

If no one can help we will continue searching as we’ve always done. I appreciate everyone’s input but posting toilets and responses that don’t have anything to do with this thread reminds me of when we were looking for front load washers and everyone had a great opinion on top loaders. 🤷🏻

Yeah, Good luck with your quest.

Apparently I misunderstood. I thought that you were looking for a more astheticly pleasing composting toilet.

I am. I tried to look at that link you posted but it’s just a page with a bunch of links. Couldn’t find anything. There’s nothing aesthetically pleasing about a wooden box with a toilet seat on top.

The way i feel is as long as the bathroom is nicely done a semi ugly toilet isnt a big deal. I'd rather be as off grid as possible.
