Hand washing dishes??!? Barbarians!
For the modern (lazy) man, such as myself, the compact dishwasher is the way to go. These guys use electricity, and roughly 3-5 gallons of water, so probably not the way to go for the professional boondocker. I can't imagine the 3-bin method saves much on water, but it will use almost no electricity.
https://thekitchenmastery.com/compact-dishwashers/
We use 7th Generation dishwashing gel. Very environmentally friendly stuff, and it does a great job cleaning dishes. They also make a rinse aid, which I've not used because I just now saw it for the first time. We also use their dishwashing soap for hand washing and it does a great job as well.
Disclaimer, we normally give everything going into the dishwasher a round of green scouring pad to get the baked on stuff loose. Supposedly dishwashers will remove baked on food but it's not been our experience. The dishwasher does do a great job of sterilizing everything with heat so no bleach necessary.

Boondockinf near a nice moving spring where you just put the dishes in the moving wateer and wipe them down at the same time then dry them in the sun.. at leas tthats how i remember our 4-wheeling in the mountains picnics as kids.. we had ceramic tin cups and plates and metal silverware... otherwise im taking Veloc idea and tossin them in a dishwasher.. theres bigger batteries if power is an issue

Sure do appreciate all the information you share here William, thank you!
On a youtube video one full time boondocker showed how they use a pump spray bottle of water and dish detergent solution for step one instead of a sink full of water.
I think if you have plenty of towels you can get by with very little water.

the bottle of dawn and water (AKA dawn powerwash) works really well.. the only time you really need lots of water is for super messy plates.. ie lasagna or such... dawn liquid specifically does a ver ygood job of cutting down the grease so spray it on, wipe it and rinse it is a pretty good solution.. obviusly you need to be able to rinse off your wash sponge / cloth with enough water to be clean..
I have no idea though how dawn is for the environment if you plan to drain your dishwaster on the ground vs a grey tank...

where are the composters?
how come no responses about buckets of red wigglers, dermestid beetles or wrapping the plates up in plastic and sending them to the landfill to decompose over the next 50 years.
i use a dog and a shallow sink for dishes.

Some of us have the common decency to clean our dishes in a well-established, sanitary manner consistent with societal norms. When you go out to eat, does your restaurant use dogs to wash their dishes? Why re-invent the wheel. If palmolive's good enough for madge, it's good enough for me.

Most brands of paper plates decompose rather quickly in a landfill.. they also sell compostable paper plates.. same with utensils..
I actually met someone in a coffee shop who is starting to get serious about building a skoolie.. they pickup-truck / tent camp now .. and they compost their toilet.. they camp with a restored 1978 square body 454 chevy(ill get to see it in person soon as he wants the A/C put back in it that the rpevious owner ripped out) it has a cap and a bed inside.. ironically the wife is fine without the A/C but he is not. they tow a small trailer that has their camping gear including a bin that gets taken home and mixed into their real compost bin after camping.. the compost bin gets used in their home garden were apparently they grow all kinds of goodies..

I'm certain they mean they have the dog get the bulk of food off so less water/detergent/sanitizer is needed.
And if they don't mean that I don't want to know.

We inadvertently eat so much dog hair it qualifies as a seasoning. (Sadly, this is an old pic & we've only got the big guy on the left still alive. But we've picked up a couple more not shown)

And NOT eco friendly either!!!! The other half insists on a counter top (that will be secured in the bus) 110/120 dishwasher that will use just 2.5 liters of water per load. I can't see using less than that with just two tubs.
Personally, I say paper plates, bamboo utensils, and use no water as you burn the plates and utensils. Only thing to wash is the cooking pot or pan.

They break down REALLY FAST in the fire pit or wood stove (depending on season).

i have an opinion but make this discussion?
why dont we have edible plates and cutlery for the camping crowed.
have been camping most of my life and on a backpack trip where water is limited what kind of food do you normally carry and how do you wash your dishes?
HAM a canteen cup in a war zone heated up with an MRE heater to wash off sometimes is better than eating a cold corn beef hash?
never could stand the omelet stuff just give me the crackers and jelly and the candy.
the instant coffee was more a dip like copenhagen/skoal or whatever.

MRE's? NO THANKS. I've had them, I'll pass except in an emergency or if I need to stop a case of dysentary.
I was Air Wing for most of my career. Worst case was chow delivered in big insulated bins.
When I was motor T.... we had resources. There are BIG boxes on those 5 ton and up trucks. I remember one time I brought an inverter, microwave, and microwave popcorn (among other goodies). We were hauling ground pounders and it was sooooo much fun to walk by with a freshly popped bag of microwave popcorn.
Motor T..... We may not be the Pride of the Corps but without us the Pride don't ride.
