Lp tank connection

I am installing a 29 gallon ASME propane tank. I got a POL style adapter to connect the tank to my 1/4" inlet of the regulator. The POL fitting won't thread into the tank valve. I tried a piece of 1/2" black pipe, just to see, and it is way too loose.

What should I use?

I think the tank valve is SAE.

Any propane dealer should have it, and the proper LPG hose.

just a note, the propane industry changes the types of fittings on tanks every 4 or so years. They do this, for market reasons, but the end result is that there is no standardization on LP gas bottle valve output threads. This is why you are in a quagmire with your tank and trying to adapt it to whatever you are hooking it up to. In 4 more years your gas supplier will tell you they cannot fill your bottle because the threaded valve is incompatible with the industry.

You would do well though to improvise black rubber hose and use a fitting inbetween two hoses. This would cost less than figuring out the mayem of fittings that propane sellers want you to use.

I've been using LP gas bottles for at least 4 decades and there has been exactly ONE instance of changing the bottle valve connector and the old one not being fillable. Maybe I just live in a good part of the country?
Oh wait, I've been all over the country with never an issue.

Duh! POL Type 1 connectors are left-hand threaded.

Right hand for outside fitting, left hand for inside fitting.
